Help needed with lightings location please.

Hi,

I would really appreciate if you guys can help me solve my dilemma. Below is how the lightings would be like in my living/dining and kitchen area. The ones in red are the ones in the current plan but I'm thinking to have them moved slightly to where I marked with the yellow marker so the pendant light can be on the dining table instead. I also have LED strip light underneath the cabinet where the stove is. So I think for the kitchen area, there is already enough lighting. What do you guys think?

Does that mean no pendant light over the island bench?

Yes. But would it be a good idea though?

The short answer is no. You need task lighting over your island bench. Imagine chopping hard vegetables or trying to delicate knife work in poor light - not a safe thing to do.

With only 2 lights in the kitchen behind you, standing at the bench will cast your shadow right where you want to work. Watch for shadows.

Oh good that you point out on the shadow part. Thank you. So I think the best for now is to just leave it as it is. No pendant light over the dining table is still fine I guess. Or if we have extra budget, we can add another pendant light there.

Have you done a furniture layout to scale on your plan? Can’t see how you’re going to place a dining table there and keep the overhead lighting in the living how it’s shown. Going back to where you’ve shown the light over the dining if you move it, well like to see how a dining table is even going to fit there.

This is the change that I sent to the builder. I decided to just add another pendant light at where I marked with the blue marker. The pendant light over the island stays. Would this be good?

The size of the living/dining area is 7880mm x 6200mm

Certainly will. You need a light over the island and the dining room.

My advice would be just ask electrician to put conduits and pre-wire them where ever you plan to have lights and switches in the future, but do not want to put them as yet. It will save you a lot of hassle in the future and won't be costing a fortune.
Measure and make pictures of where your wires are, so later you could just cut your gyprock where needed and let electrician install the actual lights and switches for you.

And yes, think of Wi-Fi enabled switches (compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Home) for your downstairs living area, they cost only a little bit over standard ones, but look much better than prehistoric Clipsal and you would be able to control them from any point in your house - it usually sucks going to and fro down the stairs just to switch your lights off.

As my builder uses Clipsal, I think I just wanna stick to that as we're going to start building very soon. But I looked in the Clipsal website and found some that are Wi-Fi enabled. I saw those switches during our electrical selection but the price are super expensive >_< Our quote for electrical is a lot (I think) as we just want to have all the lightings ready when we move in. (We had $10K quoted for electrical. Ours is a single storey)
