The building is stone foundations which over the years have had efflorescence build up and mould. My intentions are to clean the face of any friable mortar, pressure wash and then look to apply lime render and plaster. I want to know the difference between using lime putty and sand vs hydraulic lime and sand when rendering walls? Mostly in regards to preparation of the mud? Setting time differences? Shrinkage? Lots of what I have read states that lime acts as a breathable mould and moisture retardant. My goal is to leave wall a white colour to improve light in the room, and treat walls in a way which is in line with heritage refurbishment.. hopefully reducing the mould and “basement” feel of the space. I also am wanting to know wether I should aim for flat walls or walls which follow the undulations of the stone? I would prefer follow undulations but I’m not sure if this would creat a more technically difficult job? If I was to mix hydraulic lime and sand, chopped animal hair and apply to wall with scratch coat to fill majority and get relatively flat. Allow to dry. Follow up with a second coat. And then top with a finer sand and 1:1 hydraulic lime. Trowel finish with a small wooden float or sponge float. Would this work? I have experience with cement based render and am confident with hawk and trowel. I am just finding it difficult to get any clear idea on lime based. Thanks !
