Making Old Home Modern

Hi, my partner and I have just bought our first home. He is a builder and I do some design, so we are wanting to renovate it. Its an old QLDer style (not highset, but balcony all round) and we would like to make it modern inside with open living areas etc. I am having trouble finding a 'professional' who can help with general design, on what is selling in the market etc. I have an architect, but is there a profession that can help with floorplan 'ideas'?
I would have thought the architect would be the floor plan expert.
