It very much depends on what you like the look of best, and what you can afford. We have re-milled blackbutt and it looks great, but there are minor issues.

I guess I’m wondering how they compare in terms of quality. I know the bb has a higher Janka but the ss is not hugely different- how much does this matter? Also the ss is slightly cheaper- does this indicate lower quality? The ss seems to have less variation and this appeals to me but it’s hard to tell from sample.

Sorry, can’t help in a comparison as we didn’t compare those. I will just say that: (1) durability is not just dependent on the type of timber, but also the finish you choose; and (2) all floors will mark eventually, but with solid timber the marks appear more as patina, whereas with other flooring, marks just tend to look like damage.

Thanks, for anyone researching later we decided on the blackbutt floors, I like the look and the hardness and we were told it resists termites while the stringy bark doesn't, it's also rated well for bushfire. Can't wait to see it finished!
