Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Sep 08, 2008 11:13 am Hi Everyone, Just wanted to get some ideas on our wood floors. Facing the pool is North and we are wanting to have no window coverings on the windows around the back section.
We will probably be having Grey Ironbark and I was wondering what the implications of full sun will be on my floors. What do I have to consider with the above things in mind. We had considered living a year in the house and seeing what effects there are but if someone has tried this or knows the effects please let me know. Here is a reminder of what our bottom floor will look like. http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s360/gweluphome/bottom-1.jpg Re: What are the effects of Full sun on my timber floors........ 2Sep 08, 2008 1:49 pm Well in summer expect the boards to shrink, especially in areas where there is direct sunlight. Also be prepared for some discoloration in these areas.
In winter they expand back to usual. This happened to me, I whinged to my partner who told me to suck it up otherwise put other floor coverings. In saying that, my floors arn't sanded or sealed yet so may shrink less once it has done so. (Not confident as a mates floor shrunk slightly in summer, in the areas where his windows were placed. edit: when i say shrink i'm talking about a slight (1mm) gap between some boards in this area). Also just to clarify my floor was glued and secret nailed very tightly. Re: What are the effects of Full sun on my timber floors........ 3Sep 08, 2008 6:30 pm The timber in the full sun areas will also darken at a much faster rate than the rest of the floor ( all timber darkens with age)
Timber floors generally expand in summer as their is more moisture in the air whilst they shrink in winter when its drier. The boards in direct sunlight in summer can, as said, shrink so gaps can be fairly noticable around them. Re: What are the effects of Full sun on my timber floors........ 4Sep 08, 2008 6:33 pm Thanks for that guys, I expected some movement but so far it doesn't sound to serious and I will have the option of tinting and possibly put something on the window if after 1 summer it is unbearable, Re: What are the effects of Full sun on my timber floors........ 5Sep 08, 2008 7:14 pm All timber floors move constantly, they are natural product as are thus prone to the effects of their enviroment. Hi Kristy Around $1.7-1.8m or around $4,600/sqm. if you PM me your email I will send you a break up in a spreadsheet so you can get an understanding of the costs for… 1 9980 Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15924 2 4687 |
