Floating floorboards over SLATE!

I have a slate kitchen that was layed 30 years ago. The house had extensive water damage and now some of the slate has cracked and lifted and the cement grout is cracked too.

I DON'T want to lift the slate up because I know if I do that, I'll damage the wooden floorboards underneath and I don't want to have to replace that as well.

Is there anything I can apply on top of the slate to make it level, and seal the cracks, before laying down floating floorboards or laminate???

Thanks, Alicia.

I would probably render it and then paint it as per your other advice, or gyrpock over the top.
