Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Sep 06, 2008 7:18 pm Hi.
My house of 8 years (literally...it's 8 years old) creaks terribly in certain areas when you walk from A to B. I am planning on updating my carpet so I have the opportunity to do something about this...is that possible? I remember watching my neighbour going his around his house and nailing away madly at the particleboard after the builder had already done it. His floor doesn't creak I suppose there's nothing stopping me from trying this but if it's not actually going to work....well, I'd rather save my time and money! And I hope there's nothing more sinister to the creaking Ideas? Thanks everyone. Re: Creaking floor - can I fix it? 3Sep 06, 2008 10:12 pm Is the house on bearers/joists? The proper way is to get underneath and screw + liquid nail a cleat ( eg. 70 x 35 treated pine) to the side of the joist and botttom of particleboard flooring where there is movement.
If you can wait to the carpets are removed, try screwing the particle board down into the joist in the squeaky spots. It may save you getting under the house. Yep...that;s what I was hoping to do once the carpet was up. I would prefer not to get under the house (SPIDERS! ) but am pretty sure I can manage putting in some screws. Just wasn't sure if it would work but seems I was on the money. Presumably the folk at Bunnings can point me in the right direction when it comes to selecting the right hardware Re: Creaking floor - can I fix it? 5Sep 07, 2008 6:47 pm Use an 8g x 51mm screw to start with. The PB flooring is 19mm thick so will give you 32mm bite into the joist. If the joists are hardwood you will need to drill a pilot hole with a 3mm drill. Ain't that the truth! We used to have a tile roof and had it replaced with colorbond and suddenly everything throughout the entire house sounds louder! 4 6653 Hey guys, what’s everyone opinion on James Hardie linea direct fix to frame? Would this be the most common method and anybody ever had any problems down the track? 0 5132 DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair If the railhead is so poorly fixed it is also likely that the railhead is also non compliant, what about overflows and sealing railhead to the gutters?. 3 5963 |
