Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 28, 2018 10:04 am Please can you help us decide what type of flooring to use for the ground floor of our new build home! Ideally it would be timber but as it will continue into the open plan kitchen and we also have a toddler (who likes to bang on the floor with kitchen utensils ) I think we're going to need something more hard wearing, low maintenance and waterproof. We're going round in circles with our discussions: Luxury Vinyl Planks - should be reasonably wear and waterproof but I'm concerned they will feel a bit thin and "plasticky" and have heard from friends who had bad experiences with bubbling/lifting etc Timber-look tiles - no issues with wear or water but would they feel too cold and hard underfoot? and once they're in we're pretty much stuck with them as it is a big job to remove/replace Hybrid planks - we have seen a couple that look good but I haven't found anyone who has lived with them - do they actually deliver what they claim re. scratch resistance and waterproofing? Does anyone have any thoughts/experience on what will be best to achieve a timber look and feel floor which is up to the challenge of kitchen and child abuse? Re: Flooring dilemma - hybrid or vinyl or tiles? 2Jun 28, 2018 10:12 am Don’t know what vinyl planks your friends got but provided you go for a quality product such as Karndean you shouldn’t have any issues and hard to tell their product from real timber. Of course they cost more than other brands but some people think they can achieve the same with an inferior product and then bag out ALL vinyl planks/retailers as no good. I have lined-up Karndean Looselay Longboards for my house currently being built. We ruled out the following due to : Timber - beyond budget, require maintenance, we prefer a floor that can be mop cleaned when required Tiles - too cold in winters laminate click fit - they scream "timber imitation", noisy underfoot, we prefer a floor that can be mop cleaned when required Hybrid click fit - they scream "timber imitation", noisy underfoot Re: Flooring dilemma - hybrid or vinyl or tiles? 4Jun 28, 2018 10:51 am IamSAM gillybean Don’t know what vinyl planks your friends got but provided you go for a quality product such as Karndean you shouldn’t have any issues and hard to tell their product from real timber. We were going to have the Mountain Spotted Gum in looselay longboards but they have since brought out a new acoustic plank in some pretty amazing variations, we have chosen Australian Ghost Gum. I have lived in seven houses with timber floors ranging from 100 years to 1 year old, and mopping was never an issue (except that I didn’t particularly want to do it). Have you been happy with it? We are building a new house on the sunshine coast in Australia, and trying to decide if we should stick with Tiles or go with Hybrid Vinyl Planks? Not sure if i'll get sick of the timber "look" or if it is just a trend at the moment? 1 15753 ShaneG We have been doing heaps of hybrid floors lately. The hollowness is caused by low spots in the slab or subfloor. No slab or particleboard floor is going to be… 1 10403 Hi all, we would like to install hybrid flooring but concerned after reading some negative comments.
