Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Sep 04, 2008 11:04 am We are putting in a new kitchen, and the company does not do floors, so we have to do it our self. We want to put tiles down and there is laminate there at the moment. We have had a few quotes some say remove the laminate and then put tiles down, others say put it on top of the laminate. There is also the question does the tiles go in before or after the kitchen has been installed. Again some say before others say after, some say when the old kitchen is removed, then put tiles down, then install new kitchen etc..
so what is the right way of doing this? thanks Yvette Re: kitchen floor 2Sep 04, 2008 1:17 pm I would say rip the laminate up and put in the tiles after the kitchen cabinets are in. You will obviously need to tile under any appliances such as dishwasher and fridge.
Make sure you pull up every last scrap of laminate so the floor is level. The adhesive they use for tiles isn't designed to stick to laminate and the surface needs a certain amount of porosity which laminate won't have. Re: kitchen floor 3Sep 17, 2008 9:27 am Sigh another company has told us that they will lay concreate slabs on top of the laminate, then lay the tiles. Does this sound better or is it better to remove the whole lot? Re: kitchen floor 4Sep 22, 2008 3:48 pm Hi there. We're renovating our kitchen as well. It has some tacky vinyl tiles on the floor, which we'll be pulling up then we're going to tile over the entire area before the cabinets go in.
I realise it's a bit of a waste, but looking ahead to selling the property, I'd want to give the future owners the flexibility of changing the cabinets without haven't to redo the floor as well.
