Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Aug 29, 2008 10:59 am Hi All,
We found a great deal on our carpet yesterday - we wanted the Redbook Applique range in 9- Shale - so a charcoal colour with scattered squares. We got a quote from Solomans who told me I needed 58 L/m, and recevied a quote of over $11K. We found a place yesterday who will lay it on Gold Foam which is apparently better than rubber - same carpet for under $8K, and he recalculated the measurements from the plans and said that we only needed 49l/m. Needless to say we are very happy (trying to convince hubby that the money saved can go towards Plantation Shutters ) But we wanted the Redbook as this one comes with a 15yr guarantee on wear, fade and stains... so very appealing when I have 2 very clumsy & messy boys!. Anyway, we were told that the foam was better to lay under the carpet - it also has an anti-bacterial treatment. As with rubber indents from furniture tends to stay in the carpet & underlay. Is this correct? Could anyone please shed some light!! Kind Regards Sasha 1st time bldrs, fussy and impatient! Re: Foam or Rubber underlay? which is better 2Aug 29, 2008 11:32 am Sasha,
you might like to look at these threads. Ash is our resident expert on Carpet https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.p ... t=underlay https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.p ... t=underlay Happy at Home Re: Foam or Rubber underlay? which is better 3Aug 29, 2008 6:11 pm Sasha,
Yeah, read those other threads, particularly the one on Prime underlay. Whether you choose foam or rubber, go for the best in the range. I'd go with Prime myself. No probs if you like the Redbook carpet. A good quality nylon range, but don't believe all the marketing (that the 15 year warranty mostly is)! Care for it well, and it'll serve you well though. What worries me a little is the difference in quotes between stores. Don't assume the cheaper one is a better deal! You must have a very large home!!! Each contractor should provide a floorplan, showing where they intend to put seams and cross-joins. Some will use less carpet, but have a lot more seams, and sometimes in ways that make it a patchwork! The trap of false economy should be avoided. Anyway, compare quotes, plans, and calculations carefully. Maybe get a third quote for cross reference. Its a big decision, so make it wisely, (and going with the cheapy is usually NOT wise)! Cheers! Ash. Re: Foam or Rubber underlay? which is better 4Aug 29, 2008 7:58 pm Thanks Ash,
We were mainly concerned with the first quote, she was a young girl working in the family owned store & it took her ages to work out the dimensions. Not easy with two irratable boys in tow.... The guy at the second place which had the hugest range of carpets and timber floors saved us money by actually calculating it correctly. So there is over $1000 saved alone. He also talked thru to us where the joins would be, considering the room was 3.750mwide & the carpet was 3.5 we are going to have a 25cm seam running along near the wall as the room is 8 mtres long, other wise there would have had to have been 2 seams in the room. We will have a lounge along one side and the other room is the formal dining. There was only 1 unaviodable cross section, and this was with the upstairs rumpus - also using a long near the wall, however it intersects with the entry to bed 4. He was not very happy with that & wanted to work on it a bit more . Also, I gather this is a plus (or not if they stuff up) but they cut the carpet to the shape of the plan so they can cut the carpet & use it more efficiently. That way they can limit their seams as well as wastage. i.e so the extra for the stairs is actually cut off in one peice from bed 3 & 4. Hence that could also be where the girl added extra on. They have a factory on site where they cut the carpet. So I guess unless they stuff up it is more cost effective. I read the posts on the type of laying etc, so will call him tomorrow armed with a myriad of questions. I think we will be happy with the nylon, in the end, as usual you only notice it for the first month or so, then it is just carpet after that!!!!!!! Thanks I will re-read the other links as I am not sure what underlay it is, I was told that it was the gold foam with antibacterial, so will do a bit more research on that! Thank you all for your posts! It is getting exciting! CYA sasha 1st time bldrs, fussy and impatient! Re: Foam or Rubber underlay? which is better 5Aug 29, 2008 9:46 pm Now I'm scared...reading about people laying carpet with heaps of seams!! Visible seams!! I don't want that! How can you tell beforehand if this will happen!?!? AAAGH!
Is Harvey Norman one of these cheap layers?? *fearful* How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Foam or Rubber underlay? which is better 6Aug 30, 2008 6:38 pm grace_slick Now I'm scared...reading about people laying carpet with heaps of seams!! Visible seams!! I don't want that! How can you tell beforehand if this will happen!?!? AAAGH! Is Harvey Norman one of these cheap layers?? *fearful* Hi Grace_slick, We found Harvey Norman really expensive, we have put our deposit down today with Floor's Dominion in Sydney - not sure if they have a branch in QLD, but they had an August special of only $1 l/m charge for laying so we made it by a day!! When he put in the dimensions in the computer today it came close to $10, 500 - which was comparable to the quote by Soloman's(minus the extra 9l/m that she over quoted us). HN was at least $2k more. It was only luck that we stumbled across this place & they had the hugest selection (but once we decide on what we like we generally stick to it). The manager asked for our plans, double checked the measurements, then drew in pencil where the seams will be. So I guess one of the downfalls of going with a store like Harvey Norman is if they do not have the specialist staff you don't get the service. I am sure that you could ask them to identify where the seams in the carpet will be. If they can't do that - ask them to send your plans through to their estimator. When i got a quote from HN he said they would buy the whole 58l/m and store it in the warehouse straight away, so it was there for us. Whereas this place will cut it out like a jigsaw pauzzle & place it in the rooms to maximise usage. I went in and asked if I could upgrade the underlay - pretending that I wanted the best & he said that it is the best & it can't be upgraded, so we were happy with he quote of $7484.00. Doing well with the floors so far - now have tiles & carpets.... time for quotes for fences & driveways and blinds!!! CYA Sasha 1st time bldrs, fussy and impatient! Re: Foam or Rubber underlay? which is better 7Aug 30, 2008 6:53 pm Grace it depends on the type of carpet you buy as to wether the joins are visible.
Plush and twist pile carpets very rarely show the joins, if they are joined well. When I bought my new carpet I asked the guys to show me where all the joins were going to be in each room. Make sure you do this. Most carpets comes 3.66 wide, you can measure your apartment to see which way the carpet will best be laid. And I prefer foam underlay over rubber, rubber wears and gives out over a few years. We're going for wool twist or cut pile, so hopefully the joins won't be too obvious. We'll definitely ask where they'll be too. I'd never even thought about that before. How silly. lol.l We went to Carpet Choice today and the guy was very nice. He's coming out with samples on Friday at 2.30pm. A guy from Solomons Flooring is coming out at 4pm Thursday, and I'll also have some samples from Harvey Norman that afternoon too. So we're on a carpet roll here! lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! brokers will also be in a position to get you a better rate than the advertised rate most times. 6 7566 Hi there, looking to have a gym in a new build. Planning to install some sort of rubber mat flooring (on concrete) i.e. Asking the builder to not do floorboards in the gym… 0 221 Oh no! I would use a can of expandable foam ( there are some that will take render) then cut it back and render over the top 1 4141 |
