Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Aug 26, 2008 5:40 pm I went to Harvey Norman Flooring the other day and found several carpets I really liked, so I'm pleased about that, HOWEVER some were 100% wool which is great but they were not overly expensive, like I expected.
Is there anything wrong somehow with carpet that is 100% wool (cut pile for instance), extra heavy duty and all that, but is only around $55 per square metre?? Some of the nylon ones are more expensive than that! And also some wool 80% and nylon 20% blends were the same price or more expensive. Why!?!? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Is 100% Wool Carpet Ever Cheap? 2Aug 27, 2008 5:18 pm PI SS.ED. OFF.
The Harvey Norman carpet quoting guy never showed up. I waited from 2.50pm until 4.10pm (appt was at 3pm). I called at 3.40pm to enquire about it, and the head guy said he'd been held up and was late but he'd call me. NO CALL! I left, DISGUSTED and stressed because I've just wasted my entire afternoon when I had SO many things I needed to do and could've been doing here at home. UGH! *punching walls* And we STILL need to organise the carpet quote, all over again. WHY ARE PEOPLE SUCH A-HOLES?!!? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Is 100% Wool Carpet Ever Cheap? 3Aug 28, 2008 11:55 am Is it normal for people to just not show up or even have the decency to call when you’re sitting around an empty apartment on the floor!? My mum was sympathetic but not surprised. My friends on another forum were also not surprised. They said to get used to it. WHY SHOULD I HAVW TO!? I am DISGUSTED. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Is 100% Wool Carpet Ever Cheap? 4Aug 28, 2008 12:15 pm That sucks. I'd say that your business elsewhere but it sounds like you have a good deal on the carpet, if they ever show up... Re: Is 100% Wool Carpet Ever Cheap? 5Aug 28, 2008 12:26 pm Grace, vent away! Its clearly not professional or reasonable to not make an appointment without at least a courtesy call if they are late or whatever. Good enough reason to not deal with them. Maybe return the favour. Make another appointment and keep them waiting somewhere without fronting yourself. Doesn't hurt to help karma along sometimes!
Anyway, about wool carpet costs... there can be many factors influencing costs of various carpets. Often, larger retail chains buy certain stock in bulk at negotiated cheaper prices, and so can sell these lines at pretty competitive prices. Generally, these are the lines they promote and sell in higher volumes, and so can be quite good value (IF in fact it is a carpet you like and suits you). My preference is to but more selectively, and buy quality carpets, whatever the cost, (but thats me). Generally, wool carpets cost more to produce, than synthetic carpets. The cheaper variety of wool-rich carpets are usually quite light weight, and don't last all that long before they are getting worn and thin. I don't think they are a good buy. I steer buyers to more dense, quality wool carpets. They are usually at least around 38oz or more. This refers to the density and weight of the carpet, or how much yarn is in each square yard of carpet. Generally, the higher the better, but around 40 to 48oz is fine. Other factors are the wool type, its quality control in terms of scouring, dye methods, construction methods, quality of backing materials etc... Bottom line is... if its cheap, what quality do you expect? The exceptions can be when there are genuine sales or stock that are remnants, and you can buy great quality very cheap. I bought some top shelf NZ wool wiltons and axminsters some years back at about 1 tenth the normal price, as the store was closing down, and I snapped it up! Ash. Re: Is 100% Wool Carpet Ever Cheap? 6Aug 28, 2008 12:54 pm So Ash, in your very knowledgeable opinion, would you (if you were me, lol) buy wool carpet for a price of about $50-$60 per square metre? I just want carpet that looks nice, is soft, extra heavy duty, and retains the colour and condition for a while (at least 5-10 years).
I sent a fax to Harvey Norman (their phone rang out), and got a phone call back within the hour, and the guy was very apologetic and he’s now coming around today at 3pm. GOOD. Good to move away from steel anyway for all your reasons, but it's also thermally poor. 16 18191 As is per usual for many of the past failed RWH regulations, it is probably traceable to a bureaucrat who's ego overrode the need to seek the appropriate expert… 1 1242 1.
