My husband and I visited the builders showroom on the weekend to get a feel for what they have on offer come selections. Last time around one of the hardest choices was floor tile, and it seems history will be repeating itself.
They have only one wall of floor tiles to choose from, and of that 1/2 are porcelain - mostly in 600mm x300mm format which is fine by me. The problem is the choice of colour and finish.
I am aiming for somewhat of a contemporary/mid-century/scandi interior so light greys and warm timber tones (oak and light walnut). I was hoping for a mid-grey - light charcoal stone looking tile for the whole house except the bedrooms and formal lounge, but there was no true grey tiles on offer. There was a charcoal but I dismissed it because it was too dark.
By process of elimination I narrowed it down to 3 colours - none of which are perfect.
I think the Kalahari Ash (top tile in above picture) is probably the closest tone I was looking for, however it is available in either gloss or matt. Gloss = shiny, and I'm not sure this is something I want for the whole house and goes against my idea of mid century finishes. Matt = slightly rough texture, and I'm concerned it will be a pain to clean with dirt getting stuck to them. I also prefer the 'pattern' in the Linseed (second/middle tile in above picture) as it is more like a sandstone smooth pattern, rather than dotty like a wannabe granite.
Ignore the Laminex samples - these are unlikely to be our final colours but they give an idea what I'm after.
These are the same tiles laid out on the floor - lightest is Linseed in matt finish, middle is Kalahari Ash in gloss finish, darkest is Bluestone in matt finish:
And a comparison of the same tile - Kalahari Ash in both polished and matt finish, with the lighter coloured Linseed on top to compare the patterns:
So gloss or matt? Which tile would you choose and why?
