Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Aug 11, 2008 7:34 pm Hi Everybody,
Got another quote today back for a upgrade...we wanted to have the whole staircase made from blackbutt to match our floors. We are beginning to think we dont need this upgrade as the wood the builder was going to use can be stained to match our floors. If you upgraded your staircase, what was the most you were prepared to spend? Also, does the staircase need to match the wood floors exactly? I would prefer to spend the money elsewhere I think but would like to know other peoples opinions? All answers greatly appreciated as always Mrs B Re: Wood Staircase 2Aug 11, 2008 7:38 pm Save your money, get it stained!
It will look just as lovely. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Wood Staircase 3Aug 11, 2008 7:41 pm not meaning to spend your money but I think given the quality of everything
else it would be a shame not to do the stairs in the same wood you may regret it that said I know its expensive! oops michelle said the opposite! Re: Wood Staircase 5Aug 11, 2008 7:44 pm We will just be getting ours stained to a close match to the wood - I'm not really fussed if it isn't exact - I'm sure that is the last people will be looking at in your beautiful home.
I agree with Mich - save the money and go the stained option My karma ran over your dogma Re: Wood Staircase 6Aug 11, 2008 7:44 pm In all honesty….as long as the job is done well, there’s no reason why the floor and the stairs cant look as good as each other.
There are great stains out now, I don’t think it will be a problem to match them at all. There's will be a lot of things in my build that are simply non negotiable but other things that are more...yeah ..that'll do. It's all about the degree of importance of the stairs to YOU.
Will close enough be good enough, it's just not that important. If so go for the stained wood. But as bec said if it's something that will always be a bit of a nag at the back of your head, go for the Blackbutt. That's how I decide such decisions Mrs B. Helpful aren't I? Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Wood Staircase 9Aug 11, 2008 8:49 pm Thanks guys for your quick responses!
It seems to me that it will have to be put into the pile of 'another compromise' Bec....Yes the staircase does meet the floorboards. I thought the same as you as well, everything else has been done to a standard we can afford so why not the stairs. However, we are coming to some 'big ticket upgrades' with the finishing and I think this money will be better spent on the kitchen. I'm going to talk to my builder and see what he thinks... Michelle and Bel....I agree and when we were told the price I immediately thought we could just stain the wood (Vic Ash) to match the floors, honestly who would know...(except for the thousands of people around the world who visit this forum) Jo...This has been exactly what I have been doing all along. Not compromising on some things that are really important and other aspects of the house...it will do as long as it dosent look 'chooky' Paula...you are so funny But you know I still appreciate your advise Other comments much appreciated, we need to give an answer tomorrow. Mrs B Re: Wood Staircase 10Aug 11, 2008 9:29 pm Exactly what wood are they using??
Blackbutt isn't that exspensive as far as solid timber stairs go. I think stairs should be noticably different rather than lookin like a bad attempt at stain matching if not using the same timber. I remember you saying this somewhere before about blackbutt. I think they are using Vic Ash but I will check with the builder tomorrow. I really have to ponder about this tonight. I trust my builder to look after the quality of all products that go into the house so I will also ask him what the stain is like. Mrs B Re: Wood Staircase 12Aug 12, 2008 5:48 pm Update,
We are not going with the blackbutt. Decision was mainly due to the actual design of the stairs as the treads are not the main feature. We are having that really nice green glass as the balstrades (sp) and that is going to cost a fortune. The glass will be the feature so worth the upgrade. Stairs will be made of Vic Ash Mrs B Re: Wood Staircase 15Aug 12, 2008 7:50 pm Furniture grade Vic Ash is about the same if not a little dearer than blackbutt Re: Wood Staircase 16Aug 12, 2008 8:35 pm Dukekamaya Furniture grade Vic Ash is about the same if not a little dearer than blackbutt Thats right, Luke, exactly what we thought hence the decision not to waste 3k. I wonder how many people upgrade when really there is no cost difference Mrs B Re: Wood Staircase 18Aug 12, 2008 8:40 pm I personally wouldn't use Vic Ash/ Tassie Oak for stairs - too soft Re: Wood Staircase 19Aug 12, 2008 8:41 pm Paula 3k to upgrade for something that cost the same?????????????????
