Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Sep 10, 2008 2:22 pm Is $4,040 a good price for carpet to a 2 bedroom, large open plan living area apartment of 72 square metres or almost 20 lumal or whatever it’s called metres? For 100% wool twist pile soft carpet that’s extra heavy duty and with a 7 year guarantee? That includes taking the old carpet away too, and putting a new trim along the kitchen area. (the tagged price of the carpet is $54 per square metre, so it’s added on an extra $152 to that to take away the old carpet, upgrade the underlay and also the trim thing)
Is this ok? Carpet expert people?? lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Is this price ok for carpet? 2Sep 13, 2008 1:14 pm That sounds about spot on due to the extra stuff like upgrade on underlay and removal of old carpet but I am sure they will want to use the existing smoothedge if so just ask them to double it up side by side is better.
Also make sure the underlay you chose is not higher than the smoothedge if it is the smoothedge has to be raised otherwise the carpet will not stay on the pins the underlay will force it off, sorry to give you that info but I see it all the time when others buy better quality underlay but forget about the hight difference with the smoothedge and no layer will tell you. Craig Re: Is this price ok for carpet? 3Sep 15, 2008 5:26 pm Really? Oh dear. I'm scared now! I've got no idea where the smooth edge is or how high it is or what! I'll mention it to them when they come on Wednesday morning to lay it...
Looking forward to having my grout done tomorrow at 8am! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Is this price ok for carpet? 4Oct 17, 2008 12:37 pm how did it go ?
for that price you would want a good carpet and a good job. im not saying its expencive, its a good price that should get you a great carpet and good laying job. as for raising the smoothedge, thats not called for. If the carpet is layed properly, with proper power stretching and proper smoothedge gap between the wall (this gap is different depending on the carpet thickness) you will not have a problem. i can understand why 'grout perfect' thinks the underlay is the problem, becuase it appears thats way when you see it. but as i said proper laying will not allow this to happen. its not the underlay forcing it off, its the loose carpet and incorrect gap allowing it to lift up. just make sure they use architectural (spelling?) smoothedge, with 3 rows of pins. I wont use anything less and anyone who does it just cutting costs and quality. Re: Is this price ok for carpet? 5Oct 17, 2008 1:16 pm Sorry but I have to disagree if the underlay is higher than the smoothedge I mean a lot higher than normal than there will be problems even if it is powerstretched in I have seen this many times before, I am a certified layer and re installer our instructors teach us this and it is something even your exp carpet layers do not know, sure it can be a little bit higher thats normal but not to high.
Craig Re: Is this price ok for carpet? 6Oct 17, 2008 4:00 pm fair enough mate !
i still only think you would have problems if it wasnt powerstretched or they only used domestic smoothedge. the thickest underlay they make is dunlop ultimate at 13mm, and becuase i always use archi / commercial smoothedge ive never had any problems. but im glad ive never run into that problem ! hope no one else does either ! Re: Is this price ok for carpet? 7Oct 17, 2008 4:31 pm Hi Steavo
We find it mostly with foam underlay as it swells due to the heat we get in summer after 3-5 years the carpet ends up prying itself off the tacs during foot traffic etc it is also due to the carpets thickness aswell we try and match all three smoothedge, underlay and carpet thickness power stretch drum tight and it will last 20 years or more. Craig Re: Is this price ok for carpet? 8Oct 17, 2008 5:54 pm yeah fair enough mate !
dunlop excellay is the way to go! best value underlay ever, and 7mm thick ! are you a tiler/ in the tile business? is there any reason other than saving money that tilers dont put down the aliminium angle in doorways etc where it meets the carpet? Re: Is this price ok for carpet? 9Oct 17, 2008 8:17 pm Hey steveo
Yeah, the carpet looks fantastic!! We love the colour, the feel, and even when we had 3 removal men coming in and out and back and forth delivering all our stuff when we first moved in, the carpet didn't show any dirt or marks or dents or anything. It's been over a month now and it still looks beautiful. We vacuumed a while ago and the thing was FULL of wool! Heheh. It was quite funny. We had to empty the container 3 times because it was clogged with all the wool tufts that had come off from the carpet. The only things of slight concern are... 1. The smell is STILL SO STRONG!!!! It smells all chemically to me. My partner says to her it smells like wet sheep, but to me it's not as natural as just plain wool or a "sheep". We keep our doors and stuff open as much as possible (usually from 3pm until 11pm) but the smell isn't going away much. 2. In a couple of areas, where you can see a visible seam where laid, say for example there's a seam going across a part of the short passageway. It goes across from wall to wall, and on one wall where the carpet meets the wall at the seam, there's a dent sort of thing. Right up against the wall...there's carpet there, but it's almost as if it "falls down" in an area about the size of a thumb. It's like there's no underlay in that specific spot. Is that weird? Is that weird? good to hear overall your happy with it you just cant go wrong with a quality wool twist ! 1. i know that smell your talking about. It sure is chemicals, im almost certain its the chemicals they use to wash the wool, rather than it being the wool itself. ive never had wool carpet so i dont know how long it will take to go away, but i know our shop has never been called back for that smell so i suppose it must eventually go away ?? maybe after the first steam clean? 2. theres a few things it could be. if you were to get a good photo of it for me i should be able to tell you! the hardest part of a join is the end where it meets the wall, and theres a few things that can go wrong. So i wont speculate untill i see it having said that, twist pile carpets are the best carpets to join ! the twist of the pile hides the join really well so there shouldnt be any problems ! Re: Is this price ok for carpet? 11Oct 17, 2008 8:37 pm Coolness. I'll take a pic when I get new film for my 1900s non digital camera! lol
