As per Lukes suggestion - don't shake it, but it also sounds like the builder might have used a foam roller - and done to many overcoats - hence all the bubbles - only way out of it . re-sand. I spent last winter sanding and re-varnishing the inside of a 36 foot timber boat. Definiatly no shaking of the varnish and brushes the whole way - and no bubbles Steve Re: Bubbles in varnish? 26Aug 17, 2008 4:36 pm Most finishs recommend a lambswool applicator pad for application with brushs around the perimeters. Re: Bubbles in varnish? 27Oct 17, 2008 5:44 pm Only just got this issue resolved after living with the bubbles, well not bubbles really more like loads of dust trapped in the bubbles, for 2 months, the builders finally came back with their floor guy and have agreed to sort it out.
I think dust must have blown in through open doors and got trapped under the varnish. I didn't actually want a shiny floor either, it was supposed to be a satin finish! So, they have got detailed instructions from the manufacturors of the floor and they reckon they can get it back to how it should be by buffing it not sanding it, phew! They are also going to pay for us to stay in a hotel while they do it I'll let you know how it turns out! Re: Bubbles in varnish? 28Oct 17, 2008 6:13 pm Hi Lorraine44, I was interested to see this post as we have just had our floors sanded and polished and have lots of little bubbles around our floor. We used recycled oak and had a shiny finish. What we have noticed is that in the areas that are exposed to sunlight through the windows, there are lots of little air bubbles. We rang our floor guy who reckons it might be microscopic little bugs in the wood........ that just sounds wierd. Has anyone heard of bugs in floorboards coming out? is there anything we can do about this? You can not only see the bubbles but when you walk on them to you can feel them underfoot. It definitely is a far cry from the smooth shiny floor I was picturing! I look forward to hearing how your floor turns out with buffing, and a free hotel stay! i hope you get to choose the hotel!
cheers Helen Re: Bubbles in varnish? 30Oct 19, 2008 9:06 pm Bugs in the wood sorry but that sounds like a load of old tosh!!!
Our bubbles are more visible when the sun comes out but every time I clean the floor I just notice more and more of the damn bubbles. Our guys told us that in the normal wear and tear of us walking around the house the bubbles should have disappated but they are still there after 2 months I am really peed off that it is shiny too, when the sun shines on it it shows every speck of dust no matter how many times I sweep or vacuum it I'm just praying that they can it back to what we paid for! |
