Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering Re: Very disappointed with tiling.....any ideas? 21Aug 13, 2008 11:38 am Aaargh! I just typed a huge reply and it has disappeared.
Anyway....thank you so much for your replies. We have spoken to the tiler again who reiterated how bad the slab was - he said he has video as well as photo's! It was so bad that it couldn't be fixed and he would normally refuse to tile over such an uneven surface. I wish he had told me that and then I would have told him not to go ahead. He is coming to the house on Friday to see if there is anything that can be done to improve the appearance but that is unlikely. To be honest, it is more the appearance that I am disappointed with. I am hopeful that we won't have trouble with stubbing our toes, wobbly furniture etc. It's just that we have spent so much money that I wanted the look to be perfect (now instead I'm trying to figure out how many rugs I can squeeze in one room!) My husband spoke just this morning to the building company who said, as Michelle predicted, too bad, too late! Had we given them the opportunity to fix it they would have done attempted to do so. There is no way that the tiler is going to take responsibility - he is quite fired up about the whole thing and thinks we should ask the builder to pay for the floor! I can understand Ash's point that the tiler had some obligation to ensure the floor was ok to proceed and I am really disappointed that he just went ahead presumably knowing that the result would be unsatisfactory. P1T I'm sorry to hear that you have had the same experience. Our situation too is a combination of bad slab and an unfortunate decision to plough on tiling regardless. When the tiler forwards me the photo's of the slab I will be happy to share them and will try to take photo's of the laid tiles (just so you can commiserate with me!) So now we will just have to decide whether to take the matter further or just accept that we don't have the perfect floor that we wanted (and paid for!) I think we will probably try to move on, chalk it up to experience and focus on the lovely parts of our new home. I know that is a bit weak but we're worn out by the past few days of worrying about this issue - I'd hate to have it hanging over our heads for months and months. If it was clearer that there was one responsible party (rather than it being the fault of the building company, the tiler and ME!) I might take a different stance. I really do appreciate your input. Whilst I haven't posted much I am quite addicted to this forum (no orphan there I know!) “Please explain?” What annoys me is the builder knew you would have problems! OR did he get his builders license from his Corn Flakes box???? He knew…..and he deliberately watched you progress to the tiles being laid knowing full well once that happened HE would be off the hook. I’ve got a few words for your builder ……but I’d have to moderate myself……AGAIN! Sounds to me that the tiler is trying to cover his arse! Whilst I'm not generally an advocate for people getting legalistic, and prefer settling things diplomatically if possible, I think you are being seriously rogered here! I believe you have a legal right to have it fixed, and the tiler is primarily responsible for proceding with a job he KNEW would not be satisfactory. You could sue his pants off for doing so. The photos etc he took to cover his arse could be presented against him, because ultimately, he chose to proceed when the sub-floor didn't meet Standards. Get legal advice I say! Ash. It's totally the tiler's fault. The builder wasn't even given the opportunity to fix the floor. The tiler just went ahead and tiled knowing full well the floor wasn't within the required tolerances. Similar with laying timber floors. The flooring company will check the level on the slab and will refuse to lay the floor unless the slab is suitably level first. Tell your tiler to remove the tiles at his cost. When back to bare slab, ask your builder to level the slab. Tell your tiler to relay the tiles at his cost. Re: Very disappointed with tiling.....any ideas? 26Aug 13, 2008 12:38 pm Grout Perfect Annie This can be fixed first call the builder is a must you can grind down the high areas to level with the low areas I have a few numbers for you email me and I will give them to you..
