Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Aug 07, 2008 10:14 pm Wow, I actually have a query related to building!!! I seem to do most of my posting in the Coffee Break
Anyway, we need to decide, in the next couple of days, what floor covering to have in our kitchen. Most of the house will be polished concrete (for thermal mass), except the minor bedrooms, which will have carpet. Lounge, rumpus and master bedrooms are likely to have rugs. The bathroom will have tiles with under floor heating. For the kitchen, I was thinking of floor boards, so it would be a little more forgiving on dropped plates etc. Our designer has suggested tiles, again with under floor heating so that when we get up it will be warm in the mornings. He has suggested that introducing a new floor covering in the kitchen might look a bit odd. What do you think? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ My concerns with the tiles are where would it start as the kitchen doesn't really have a definite starting point. If we had floor boards, I would most probably have the entire hallway done as well. Plus we will be having timber stairs, so it would tie in there. All opinions welcome. Concrete can look very cold! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Floor covering in our kitchen 4Aug 07, 2008 10:43 pm Oh no, 2 different opinions.
Thanks Michelle and donuts. I think our designer is trying to get me to go with the tiles so we can have the under floor heating, and is arguing that the timber would look out of place, but I think given that the stairs are timber it wouldn't be too bad, and yes as you said Michelle, it might soften it a bit. I'm just not sure about the tiles, I'm leaning more toward the polished concrete or the timber. But then as the designer pointed out that part of the floor won't get any sun so it will be very cold. Arghhhh! One of my first decisions and I have no idea!!! Might have to ask DH for his opinion when the olympics are over 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: Floor covering in our kitchen 5Aug 07, 2008 11:13 pm Heres a left field response - something soft under foot. I've just thrown down some old underlay as I prep for the sanding to be donein my kitchen and it's really nice to have a soft underfoot floor in the kitchen.
I agree with the architect - it will be cold in there with no sun on it - so do as per my suggestion above - the timber would be OK IMO - or perhaps a terracotta tile with the underfloor solar heated underfoor heating which gives you the colour match and thermal warmth. Steve Re: Floor covering in our kitchen 6Aug 07, 2008 11:38 pm I'm having hydronic in-slab heating with floorboards. I don't see any problem with the combination. (Don't put them on battens - either direct stick or on plywood.) Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Floor covering in our kitchen 7Aug 07, 2008 11:53 pm Thanks Steve and Casa.
Yes, I did think of you Casa, with your heating under the floor boards, but the designer was thinking more along the lines of those electric mats that usually go under tiles (can't remember what they are called), so I'm not sure if they will work under floor boards. We thought about hydronic heating, but I don't think our budget will allow it, not if we want all our double glazing Yak_Chat something soft under foot. A few people have mentioned that polished concrete will be very hard on the joints, so that is another reason I was leaning towards the floorboards. Hmmm, Might have to have another go at MVH to see what it will all look like 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: Floor covering in our kitchen 9Aug 08, 2008 7:44 pm Hmmmm, haven't seen cork up close. Will have to look at that, but mind you the way my knees are feeling today it might be a good idea.
