Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 27, 2011 9:17 am On Friday I went to the final inspection of our new place to make sure all OK before settlement. The carpet is the worst I've ever seen. As you can see from the pics, carpet was laid before skirting - ostensibly so they can be repainted one day. Is this normal?? I've never seen it. There are terrible gaps that look a lot worse IRL than in the pics. I've also taken some pics which give an idea of how bad the joins are in the doorways. Don't know how they were joined or how they were supposed to be joined but surely it shouldn't be this obvious? The building inspector can only put building code things in the report to be rectified. Are there any acceptable standards for carpet? Settlement is less than 2 weeks away. What should I do?? http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa433/xquisite1/Carpet%20Woes/IMAG0023.jpg http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa433/xquisite1/Carpet%20Woes/IMAG0019.jpg http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa433/xquisite1/Carpet%20Woes/IMAG0018.jpg http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa433/xquisite1/Carpet%20Woes/IMAG0024.jpg http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa433/xquisite1/Carpet%20Woes/IMAG0025.jpg Re: Carpet Laying Issues - Please Help! 2Jun 27, 2011 2:22 pm That's pretty spectacularly horrible. Looks like a 12 year old beginner was having a bit of a play. I've mentioned this place in a previous post - perhaps give them a ring and get some suggestions. http://www.carpetinstitute.com.au/ Whatever you do - don't settle with it like that. They obviously need to take up the skirtings and start again. Whoever puts down carpet after the skirting boards? What idiots. Re: Carpet Laying Issues - Please Help! 3Jun 28, 2011 2:43 pm Skirting board should go down before the carpet is laid. The skirting issue you have, is one of the reason why it should be done first. Undulations in the slab are highlighted when fitted last, as your photos show. Either that, or the skirtings aren't straight. I would be consulting the builder on the gap issue, as it is not the carpetlayers issue. The main future problem is if the carpet has to come up for replacement, or for other reasons, it is one hell of a job to get the carpet out from between the carpet-gripper and the skirting. And a major problem in relaying carpet again. as the carpet gripper is under the skirting and needs to be removed and new carpetgripper nailed at the correct distance from the skirting, to lay new carpet. Skirting damage is highly likely when trying to get that gripper from under the skirting. The join issue is the layers problem though. Thin loop pile carpet like that, is tricky to join, as there is not much pile to hide it. Just needs extra care to get it right the first time. In the photo, the first join one, are there ripples across it? They should be able stretch them out. Re: Carpet Laying Issues - Please Help! 4Jun 28, 2011 3:03 pm Thanks for the link, Amadio. Mark, yes - there are ripples. i did think it probably wasn't stretched properly. If the carpet is removed, new smooth edge installed in the proper place and then recarpeted, is it likely this will fix the problem? maybe i need slightly thicker underlay(?) Otherwise i don't see how it can be rectified without ripping all the skirtings off - which will be a big job to repaint etc. Re: Carpet Laying Issues - Please Help! 5Jun 29, 2011 9:44 am xquisite If the carpet is removed, new smooth edge installed in the proper place and then recarpeted, is it likely this will fix the problem? No. The skirting is still too high for the carpet. And getting the carpet and gripper out is a problem xquisite maybe i need slightly thicker underlay(?) The carpet gripper is still the same height at the wall. The underlay finishes at the gripper. Thicker underlay will just dip down to the gripper at the wall. xquisite Otherwise i don't see how it can be rectified without ripping all the skirtings off - which will be a big job to repaint etc. This may be your only option. Unless the builder can come up with an idea of filling the gaps. [not silicone, please] Mark Re: Carpet Laying Issues - Please Help! 6Jun 30, 2011 10:59 am Thanks, Mark. Of course what you say about the underlay makes sense - i forgot that. I'm sure they can theoretically come up with a gap-filler - even some small quad. However, it won't solve the issue of not being able to change carpet in the future. Re: Carpet Laying Issues - Please Help! 7Aug 31, 2016 8:26 pm Agree with a lot that Mark says A lot of this style of workmanship has been going on for sometime , due to no licensing in the trade, and anyone can just to pick up the tools and call themselves a carpet layer Re: Carpet Laying Issues - Please Help! 8Sep 21, 2016 12:16 am I have found home decorating products in a website which is very favorite to me.So,I want to share this website to all of you.If you want to buy home decorating products you may visit : https://www.linensncurtains.com I'm about to put down some Merbau. Is it necessary to oil underneath the boards before laying? 0 1920 Hey There. No problems re jumping in. My original question was "should I have waterproofed" the concrete slab before putting batons down. We have been told we should… 7 4313 Thanks for your reply. I will just wait and see I guess. Trying to get some more information from our builder. 9 29919 |
