Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jul 25, 2008 9:11 am Morning all!
We have laid laminate and the last thing is to attach the skirtings. What is the best way to go? One of the Bunnies advice me to use liquid nails, but Im still not ready for it - I prefer somethimg more stable like screws and real nails (: So could you give me some tips for DIYer about what type of nails should be used, what tools needed. I have concrete floors, there was carpet installed and wooden lines were attached to the floor, but I think tradesmans use some kind of automatic hammer or similar? Thanks for any ideas Jane Re: How to attach skirting boards? 2Jul 25, 2008 10:18 am Whats wrong with liquid nails?
The process is pretty simple.. http://jaw.iinet.net.au/projects/flooring.html Re: How to attach skirting boards? 3Jul 25, 2008 11:04 am floorit Whats wrong with liquid nails? This is (: "Alternatively use heavy objects to hold everything in place overnight in order to let the glue set." I have 65m of skirtings and they are really thin, and BTW - I have not a lot of time to do the job. And all "heavy objects" are still in the garage... AND the main thing - I dont believe in glue (: Re: How to attach skirting boards? 4Jul 25, 2008 6:44 pm Skirtings are generally fixed with small nails known as 'brads' fired from a 'brad' or 'fix-out' gun. Alternatively use a small ( eg 40mm -50mm x 2.8mm) nail if doing by hand.
Do not use liquid nails, if you have to remove the skitings for any reason you will rip the bottom of the gyprock to shreds. Re: How to attach skirting boards? 5Jul 25, 2008 7:53 pm I door supplier told me that he used silicone (the same stuff used to seal shower screens). He liked it since there are no nails showing (it was for a lacquered finish) and to remove it you just run a blade along the back of it.
Again, I'm not sure how good it is, but if it works then no nail heads and removable. You don't notice the nails (and this is with a clear finish) until you try to pull the skirts off.
Having had to pull some skirts off for cabinetry I'd hate to think of the mess liquid nail skirts would have done to the plasterwork. And I can reuse the skirts without there being any dried goop on the back. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: How to attach skirting boards? 8Jul 25, 2008 8:45 pm I agree that liquid nails is not the preferred way due to reasons provided by other posters.
However, can anyone tell me how builders attach skirts on a house with steel frame? Liquid nails? However, can anyone tell me how builders attach skirts on a house with steel frame? Liquid nails? Chris Err....craply....our previous house was steel framed....they basically fired the nail gun into the same spot as with timber, the nail fired through the skirt, through the plaster, hits the frame, bends and pinned the skirt to the plaster. Is that the right way....dunno....but that is how ours did it, which was why some of the skirts were loose and developed hairline openings between skirt and wall.....der!..... mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: How to attach skirting boards? 12Jul 25, 2008 9:24 pm A builder mate of mine is doing a full metal framed house at the moment (bearers, joists, wall frames and trusses)
I'll ask him about the fix-out method Re: How to attach skirting boards? 13Aug 11, 2015 5:26 pm any idea if these brad nail guns can be used to punch a small nail through brick/concrete walls for skirting boards? Re: How to attach skirting boards? 14Aug 28, 2015 10:09 am You can use real nails to attach your skirting boards but they won’t look as good as compared to if you use liquid nails. Yes, just use a hammer to nail your skirting boards. This is exactly what I was thinking but wasn't sure if it was something I'd find on the shelf. I agree with you, fixing the brackets to the board will look… 2 3258 |
