Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jul 06, 2008 9:05 am Hi All!
We are owner building and our tiling was done about 3 weeks ago. We have not yet sealed the grout. The floor is filthy, with tradesmen walking all over it with dirty boots or even muddy boots. I know we should maybe have covered it until we had time to seal it, but we didnt So I dont want to sweep, then vacuum, and then have the possibility of still having some dirt, then mopping it might turn that dirt into mud and push it into the grout and stain it. So.... does anyone know the best way to go about it???? And a recommendation for sealer?? Thanks in advance! Re: Preparing to seal grout 2Jul 06, 2008 11:57 am matamber Hi All! So.... does anyone know the best way to go about it???? And a recommendation for sealer?? ! The BEST way is clearly to have it professionally done. You cannot get the sme results without the equipment and knowledge they can provide. BEST product is a colour sealant such as Aquamix grout colorant or the colour seal from Grout Perfect. These are best at sealing, and also have the benefit of providing a nice uniform colour of your choice. Ash. Re: Preparing to seal grout 3Jul 06, 2008 3:15 pm Thanks Ash!
Being owner builder and reaching the end of our build the budget is totally stretched so unfortunately we are going to have to do it ourselves. I WISH I could get a professional in, I look at it when I go there and get all depressed and pray it will be OK! Re: Preparing to seal grout 4Jul 06, 2008 7:01 pm OK Matamber,
You asked before "what's BEST". Now you are saying, there are budget restraints. That's OK, (as long as you don't expect to get whats best). Here are some very good products from Aquamix (one of the best suppliers of quality products). http://www.aquamix.com.au/products/grout-care.php The smae day sealer will be the cheapest and simplest to apply DIY. But you should use their cleaner first to ensure grout is fairly clean before sealing. Follow their instructions carefully, and you should have a good result without costing too much. Cheers! Ash. Re: Preparing to seal grout 5Jul 06, 2008 7:23 pm Ash being a spray on application instead of a brush on, does that make it any difference in how it performs at all.
We went and bought the Davco sealer (brush application) today, and then i come home and see this thread....lol....good timing! What makes the Aquamix range better? How good is the Davco range - what's your opinion??? There was also a Dunlop brand one, which i didnt get. Also what about re-applications??? How often should they be done??? We get the keys Tues morning and grout sealing is the first item on my agenda for the day!! Re: Preparing to seal grout 6Jul 06, 2008 7:39 pm Nik, there are many products on the market sold as sealers. Many very cheap. I can't say I have real knowledge about them all, but I wouldn't expect a premium performance from a budget price.
Do you go to a GP for a specific medical complaint? Maybe, but for real solutions, you will be referred to a specialist. Aquamix are a well respected brand specialising in sealers and problem solvers specific to stone, tile & grout care. Its all they do. Their technical experts have been consulted throughout the globe to manage issues such as erosion of the Egyptian monuments etc. They are continually doing research and development, and leading the way in this field. Many other sealers are made by paint companies, or general chemical manufacturers. They tend to be 'me too' products. Not saying they aren't good, but I'll only refer people to what I know to be good. People think in simple terms.... product is called 'grout sealer'. So they apply product, and think 'grout is now sealed'. It ain't as simple as that. Performance will be very different for all sorts of reasons. Not sure about Davco. Read up on the company profile, and follow instructions carefully. Should be OK. Ash. I've filled, levelled and compacted around 100mm of roadbase in preparation to lay some outdoor court tiles.
