Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 31, 2015 12:57 am Hi All, I have been advised that if I go for wide board 130mm upward I need to top nailed to ensure no cupping or moving, has any one come across this issue? is there any other option? I've also been told that they can glue them down but not 100% guarantee. Thank you Re: Solid timber 180mm x 19mm secret nailed 3Jun 07, 2015 11:51 am Even a lot of the professional layers don't follow all the guidelines that are easily accessible in publications like the one Matt links to. One of the best things I did years ago was buy myself a moisture meter which i used quite a few times to lay floors etc. Even on jobs where we did the general carpentry work and they used a pro floor installer I was a bit taken aback by the "she'll be right" attitude of some of the guys in regards to ensuring the flooring had reached an equilibrium with the area where it was going to be laid. For that reason we used to get the flooring delivered about a month at least before we were going to lay it - something that I found was rare. Too often the flooring would be delivered one day and the next day the installers started laying it. Wide boards can be secret nailed and glued as you say but not many guys will guarantee it. A few times I've heard where these wide boards has been installed this way only for problems to arise down the track. The installers response was that the moisture level in the house has changed, not enough ventilation in the house or some other made up story to weasel their way out of it. YMMV as they say. Stewie Thank you Stewie, That is exactly what I've been told as well, and our builder who has his own timber floor installer said/ or recommend I should use 6mm Engineer instead, so that we can go as wide as we want, and perhaps the quality of 6mm one would be similar with the solid timber, because that is the same as the thickness of solid timber anyway in terms of the surface and how thick we can do sanding and polish later on. Cheers ctvu Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 11510 If this is a custom build then I would expect the builder to set out the door frame closer to the wall to avoid the gap between architrave and the wall and or specify… 9 6285 Depends...
