Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 19, 2008 2:30 pm Hi Ash (if you are available!!),
I have just received a quote from a flooring shop for our soon-to-be-built house. It's just a tad over 40 squares. I have chosen Borals Silkwood Spotted Gum single strip at $128/m fully installed and Brintons Bell Twist in Mushroom at about $86/m . I will be upgrading to 'Hallmark' underlay, which is a pinky/red thick rubbery underlay. She showed me the standard green rubber underlay, and this one looks far superior. I asked her what Brintons recommend as their underlay, and she said usually a thick felt type underlay, but that is more for commercial use, not residential. Will this thicker underlay be OK for the carpet? The floorboards will be entrance hall, hallway, kitchen, meals and family, while the carpet will be study, living, dining, stairs, TV area, master bedroom, WIR, and bedrooms 2,3 and 4. The whole quote came out at just under $29K, and I was pleasantly surprised...especially for a woven 80/20 carpet. I was expecting $40K. So, is this a reasonable quote, and is there anything I should know, or be aware of the Brintons carpet? Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! I am not Ash (sorry!!) but I think your quote sounds reasonable. I am also planning on using Boral Silkwood Spotted Gum and my quotes are roughly the same - I think you could possibly get a bit less at *** if you haven't already tried them. The carpet you are having sounds really nice, I am also after an 80/20 carpet in a mushroom colour. Where did you source your flooring from? My budget is around $25k for flooring, I'm thinking about $12-15k for timber floors and about $10k on carpet. Hope Ash can give you some good advice My karma ran over your dogma Re: Is this a reasonable quote for Carpet and Floorboards? 3Jun 19, 2008 3:07 pm Hi Haywgl!
My spotted gum quote was just over $12,500, and the carpet was $16,800. I was going to try ***, but thought I'd get a quote from this shop first (I'll PM you the details if you like!). I figured I would get a better price if it all came from the same shop, and easier to organise installation when the time comes. There are cheaper carpets, but I thought I'd start at the top and see what happens . It is a woven carpet and not a tuffted one (hence it's price), but should last me 30 years! I just hope I don't get sick of the colour!! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Never heard of a carpet quote more expensive than floorboards, I bet it is beautiful!!!
I'd love the contact details if you don't mind PMing me. I haven't contacted *** about installation etc but I think Phoneix and a few others on the forum are using their service and seem to be getting a good price, they might be a better help. Good Luck My karma ran over your dogma Re: Is this a reasonable quote for Carpet and Floorboards? 5Jun 19, 2008 4:41 pm Stormy, I would love those details, too - I see you are in S-E Melb, and we are in E suburbs, so probably not too far away! We were thinking of using Boral Slimwood - probably blackbutt, or a Tassie Oak -and I also want pure wool carpets, which i know are expensive.....and I have entrance, hall, kitchen, pantry ,family, dining and gym to do in fb, and 5 bedrooms, lounge, study, media room, kids' games and kids' study area to carpet - so I need a good quote!!!! $86 per m for Brintons woven carpet is like about 25% of what I'd expect, so go for it! The Brintons mill is in the process of closing down, and possibly they are selling off final stock at heavily discounted prices. From memory, the Bell twist is a wilton with square patterns textured into the loop pile (so its a multi-level woven loop pile, right)? The underlay should be the very best you can get. I'd suggest the prime underlay I mentioned in a separate thread about underlay. It is an orangey pink colour. The one you mentioned sounds very similar. It may be one that Brintons made for their woven carpets and should be fine. Proper laying is of paramount importance. Laying must be by a very experienced layer, and be in line with AS/NZS2455. Power stretching is a must. Seams must be sealed and seamed with premium tapes (its best stitched, but hand stitching isn't practiced anymore). Basically, insist on their best layer, and be prepared to wait. Very nice taste there Stormy. Send me some pics when its laid, so I can enjoy! Ash. Re: Is this a reasonable quote for Carpet and Floorboards? 7Jun 19, 2008 6:25 pm Many thanks Ash, I'll let them know of the laying requirements closer to the time! (No house yet!)
No loops and no squares in the carpet Ash, just a plain twist carpet in a yummy colour! Here is a picture for you to drool over! ...just excuse the very rushed and awful quality... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The carpet is actually on sale at the moment, and I'm guaranteed this price if I pay a deposit in 14 days. I'm thinking you could probably get it cheaper at *** if it is a range that they stock (or they might have something similar). I got a huge price difference from them for the same carpet that I found in a flooring shop. Happy at Home Re: Is this a reasonable quote for Carpet and Floorboards? 9Jun 19, 2008 8:22 pm Stormy I have chosen Borals Silkwood Spotted Gum single strip at $128/m fully installed Stormy, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE! contact Steven at *** in Clayton on (03) 9265 5500. We got 97.76m2 of the boral Silkwood Spotted Gum 1 strip 80mm for $68.99/m2 supplied and $20/m2 for laying. Total of $88.99/m2. Not sure if they stock Brintons carpets but its worth the call in my own opinion. (If he wants proof- quote doc. no. 5030062). But i did tell him that he'd be bound to get more Homeone members if his prices continued to be competitive! I hope i save you some $$$!!!! Don't be afraid to haggle!!!!! Or at least ask your supplier to match the price or you'll go elsewhere? haywgl I haven't contacted *** about installation etc but I think Phoneix and a few others on the forum are using their service and seem to be getting a good price, they might be a better help. Very good memory Bel! Re: Is this a reasonable quote for Carpet and Floorboards? 10Jun 19, 2008 8:51 pm Ash's blonde moment.
I went out after posting and thought..... bell twist..... why would a loop pile carpet be called bell twist? I just recall a Brintons carpet as I described that was called bell somethingorother? Anyway, all green lights from me. Very nice quality carpet! Re: Is this a reasonable quote for Carpet and Floorboards? 12Jun 19, 2008 11:34 pm Judie Wish *** delivered to Sydney. That's a great price for Silkwood. We're not getting it now because it was over budget. Judie Hey Judie, it might be worth a phone call? Maybe you'll just have to pay for the cartage???? If there is savings to be made, hey, why not try??? Re: Is this a reasonable quote for Carpet and Floorboards? 13Jun 20, 2008 8:02 am Try and pick the best underlay possible BUT just make sure when choosing underlay that it is not higher than the smoothedge as this will create major problems down the road as the carpet will not hold its stretch if this is the case the carpet installer will have to match the hight by supplying a board down first than install the smoothedge to match the hight.
Please also keep in mind that the installer must I repeat must use a power stretcher not a knee kicker if you see them just using a knee kicker than tell them to stop and ask for a professional layer as the Australian standards for carpet laying is that a power stretcher must be used even if it cost you extra trust me it will be worth it as my business does re stretcing everyday due to these reasons. Craig Re: Is this a reasonable quote for Carpet and Floorboards? 15Jun 20, 2008 2:28 pm And thanks for putting it up here - you know where I'm off to to get my floors now!!!!!!!!
Okay, so..carpet experts (Ash....and anyone else!) I like a carpet by Cavalier Bremworth...can't remember the name, but colour is Sonora, sort of brownish, with flecks through it, 100% wool, textured, not plush pile, or twist . It costs $279 per lineal metre. Is that what you'd expect, or is it overpriced??? Now, I'm definetely not an expert but I am having the following carpet in my house: Cavalier Bremworth Pique II in the Hearth which is a 100% wool carpet level loop. Sorry can't remember the price per lineal metre but was approx $66 per m2 laid including Bridgestone Gold underlay. Checked out your carpet using the following search link on their site - Looked really nice Here is the link: http://www.cavbrem.com.au/cbconsumer/in ... 4E8E5E8406 Hoped this helped. Edit: thinking it may have been around $280 per lineal metre - no idea how to work it out, I'm sure Ash will know....... Jo Re: Is this a reasonable quote for Carpet and Floorboards? 17Jun 20, 2008 5:32 pm Oh, well done, JoK - it's Tarascan Sonora!!! That price included the same underlay you mentioned, but I can't remember if that's laid! Thanks for that sqm price - will have DH look at the plans and work it out - I have NO idea!!! Had a look at yours - very nice, too Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Is this a reasonable quote for Carpet and Floorboards? 18Jun 20, 2008 7:16 pm Petal, Cav/Brem is an excellent brand. I have a Cav/Brem wool tweed carpet in my main bedroom, and a hard twist wool in the third bedroom also by Cav/Brem. They are 10+ years old and still look like new.
Ash. Re: Is this a reasonable quote for Carpet and Floorboards? 19Jun 21, 2008 12:26 pm Thanks, Ash, that's good to know. The place I got the quote from is a family run business down the road that's been there for 50 years, and the guy who runs it now (the 'grandson'!) is really helpful. I looked at quite a few, but his comment was "With 4 kids, I'd go with this one"!!!! While he is there to sell, I think he's been quite honest with me. He went through all the different types of carpets, the advantages/disadvantages, and experiences they've had over the years, and he never pressured me one way or another! They actually only deal in wool carpets now ,and he really does seem very knowledgeable. While I don't just want to pick the most expensive thing (hmm...I seem to have a knack for doing that!) I do want to choose something that will last a very long time - I don't want to be replacing that much carpet any time soon - and I plan on being there a very long time, too!!! Oh, and they have a Cav/Brem carpet in one patch of the store that they laid 5 yrs ago, and even with all the shop traffic, and dirty tradies' boots having walked all over it (and it's quite a light colour) it still looks new! So, I think I'm sold! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Is this a reasonable quote for Carpet and Floorboards? 20Jun 22, 2008 2:52 pm Stormy I was going to try ***, but thought I'd get a quote from this shop first (I'll PM you the details if you like!). Could you please PM me the the details also, as we are thinking of getting the silkwood blackbutt. Thanks Seems good to me. I've been told $4-5k/sqm is reasonable in Perth. 2 11166 Hi All New to the forum and looking for some advice, has anyone else renovated an old miners cottage in or around Ballarat and been able to identify the flooring?
