Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jan 27, 2015 1:29 pm Hi We continue to plan our new house (custom build). Would like floorboards in a nice light honey blonde colour for inside (hardwood). - What is a good choice to achieve this look? Blackbutt (I have seen some blackbutt which still looks a little dark to us others lighter)? Victorian Ash? Best combination of durability v colour and looks? Open plan kitchen/living/dining will open our onto our deck. What colour could we choose for the decking? If it's too light it will probably not weather as well? But would a contrast look as good? Also interested in what grades of flooring the experts recommend for the best combination of cost/finish. Our house is relatively modern and want a clean look but also to feel homely. I am wondering if 'natural grade' as a homely contrast to say a slick kitchen is a good or bad idea.. We are BAL 12.5 so are restricted to those timbers for the deck. Should the decking boards run the same way as the floor? Thanks. Re: Hardwood timber floor colour and deck colour 2Jan 28, 2015 12:56 am Also check out tassie oak and natural bamboo. The strand woven type of bamboo floor is very hard wearing. Sorry, can't help with the laying question... Re: Hardwood timber floor colour and deck colour 3Jan 29, 2015 5:10 am Thanks. Yes tassie 'oak' is very blonde but I was thinking about woods we could use inside and out. Bamboo thanks for the tip but we are looking for a genuine hardwood floor. We are now thinking a shade darker and going spotted gum, it's also a very hard density. Perhaps light floors are casual/contemporary, dark traditional and this will be somewhere in between. Any thoughts on spotted gum floors and what decking to go for (suitable bal 12.5). Thanks Re: Hardwood timber floor colour and deck colour 4Jan 29, 2015 10:12 am Spotted gum is my fave (along with marri) and can be used for decking. Just be aware that with spotted gum there is a lot of colour variation JoanneK has a pic on this thread: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=74698&hilit=spotted+gum+deck Re: Hardwood timber floor colour and deck colour 5Jan 29, 2015 2:09 pm Treeseachanger Spotted gum is my fave (along with marri) and can be used for decking. Do you know if it is a suitable timber for decking in a Bushfire 12.5 area That deck does look very nice. I know it is not 'naturally fire resistant' but may be on the longer list in the standard A9359?. Experts advise? Edited.. found it! "Gum, spotted Corymbia maculata Corymbia henryi Corymbia citriodora " Yay, that means we can go spotted gum in and out I think which will look really nice. And also be durable. Re: Hardwood timber floor colour and deck colour 7Jan 29, 2015 2:25 pm We had tassie oak in our rental... lovely colour, very soft... lots of dents and scratches, I wouldn't recommend it! We have spotted gum in our new house... you can check out my thread for a photo of it. We've only been in the house a week so I can't comment on the scratch resistance.
