Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 15, 2008 3:18 pm Hi guys,
After some info about slate flooring and sealing it. We have decided on slate flooring for our new home which is to be finished Oct/Nov this year. The crowd selling us the slate is happy to lay it, but recommends waiting 6 weeks before we seal it (to allow the grout to fully dry...). My questions are... will it really take that long to fully dry, and, what care do we have to take before its sealed??? Any help appreciated. Re: Slate flooring and sealing it... 2Jun 15, 2008 3:29 pm Hi there!
Basically, you need to avoid any soiling or contamination at all before it is sealed. Ideally that means not living on it. There are lots of products that can be used. Not all are equal. Only use products from a company that specialises in floor finishes, ideally stone floor specialist products. Aquamix have a few kinds of sealer that are very good. Depends on the finish you want, but I use Seal & Finish Low Sheen. It is a top coat sealer. Slate is best sealed with top coat sealers. S&F L/S is a water based quality product and easy to apply. Apply about 3 coats. Any top coat sealers act as a sacrificial barrier to protect the surface as well as give you reaction time to clean up spills etc. They gradually wear and will require maintenance and re-sealing. Time of this depends on amount of use and conditions. Time of curing before sealers will depend on a number of variables (weather, conditions etc). A good technician will measure moisture before sealing rather than just assuming its ready after xxx days/weeks. Ash. The problem will be that we are having the slate put down after handover (heaps cheaper than having the builder do it) and ideally want to move in asap to avoid the mortgage/rent headache... I guess we will see what happens then...
Thanks again, will be investigating the sealer that you mentioned, Donna Re: Slate flooring and sealing it... 4Jun 16, 2008 11:52 am I would have a professional seal it for you as if you DIY you may run into problems if you leave any excess on the surface it will be very hard to remove if left dry, you will find an AQ mix applicator in your area.
Craig I would probably render it and then paint it as per your other advice, or gyrpock over the top. 1 3321 Hi, planning on using the attached stone pieces in my bathroom.
