Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Dec 02, 2014 12:32 pm Hi all, I did search for this topic as I thought it may be a common question, but couldn't find a definitive yes or no answer. Should I seal the bare concrete slab prior to carpet being installed? My future mother-in-law says I should as it's good for people with allergies (my Fiance did struggle with dust mite allergies as a kid). I called my carpet layer and he said it was a waste of time. The quality of my underlay is more than sufficient to trap dust and protect the carpet. The sealer isn't prohibitively expensive - $160 for 15L from bunnings. I have time to do it over the weekend and there is sufficient time for it dry too. Provided sealing the concrete is of no detriment to my slab, I am open to just doing it anyway. Would love some advice from an expert! Thanks Re: Sealing Concrete Slab Prior to Carpet Laying 2Dec 07, 2014 11:11 pm Not really of any benefit from an allergen standpoint. Most allergens are in the fibres of the carpet. Sealing a concrete floor is really more a benefit as a moisture barrier for timber floors on a new build as the residual moisture in the slab may warp your timber. [Edit: Advertising links removed by moderator] Hi building inspector, I've been following your recent flurry of activity on the forum. I wish you had arrived sooner! Thank you for the advice. Your answer makes sense. I really didn't want to seal the floors, I have enough work to do! The cement will definitely coated in a moisture barrier in the areas where floorboards are being laid. Or at least, they should be. I will double check with the installers now... Thanks again!
