Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Oct 08, 2014 12:15 am Hello, I have two questions in case anyone can please help me. 1. I am renovating my house soon and will be lifting the carpets to expose the timber floors. I'm 99% sure that the timber is jarrah which I had in my previous two houses, based on the age of the house (1938) and what all the neighbours appear to have. Has anyone stained jarrah floorboards a dark, almost black colour and how did they turn out? Did you seal or oil them afterwards? 2. I'm intending to oil the boards after staining them (all professionally done) as I thought this would make dirt/dust less obvious than if I had polyurethane. Do oiled floors show the dirt less? Can anyone who has had dark stained floors share their experience with living with them? I am such a slave to aesthetics but I have two young children and a busy life, so I don't want to regret my decision. Any advice would be much appreciated - thank you! Re: Staining timber floors almost black 2Oct 08, 2014 8:15 am I am right in the middle of staining a Cypress floor black. Following on from one i did about 2 weeks ago. I think they look special, but to get perfect is quite complicated. I did stain a Jarrah floor black about 5 years ago and it looked similar to the Cypress floors. I have been using Feast Watson Proof Tint (Black Jappan) which you can dilute with a reducer to get a lighter shade of black. I have been ragging this directly onto the floor and then sealing it with Bona Traffic. A couple of things to note. The Feast Watson product is a spirit based finish, and as such smells very strong. The filters on the masks load up with the smell very quickly. Staining the floor direct gives a much better 'popping of the grain' as opposed to just using a tinted finish which looks like just a coloured finish. A stain on the floor requires a sealer of some sort (2/3 coats) I personally like the look of black floors, but it does show up dusty foot prints. I can post up some pics if you like Re: Staining timber floors almost black 3Oct 08, 2014 8:51 am Some pictures would be fantastic:) I'm having trouble visualising the different between a stained and tinted finish, are you able to clarify this further for me please? So I can't just oil the floors afterwards? It needs a sealer? I assume the choice is just matt, satin or high gloss? Thanks for your help:) Renovating and creating a small extension to a 1930s Spanish Mission with the help of an architect. Re: Staining timber floors almost black 4Oct 08, 2014 9:33 am I'll drop into the last job and grab a few pics over the next day or so. A stained floor is where the floor is directly stained with a timber stain product. This is not a hard wearing or sustainable coat, primarily used to changed the colour of the timber. This is the most realistic look from the 'staining' range. A properly stained floor really highlights the grain and gives the impression that the timber is that colour. A stained floor will need to be sealed with your preferred finish. A tinted finish floor (which people also call staining) is exactly that - a tinted finish. Whilst it still looks fine, (done well), it also looks like a coloured finish moreso than a clear sealed timber floor. What are you referring to when you say Oil? Terminology is a big issue in flooring as Oils aint Oils. Re: Staining timber floors almost black 5Oct 08, 2014 5:51 pm That all makes sense now. In regard to oil I was thinking that it would be like when I rub olive oil into my cutting board, an oil of some type could be applied to the floors once they were dark in colour. I have no idea what oil is used for floors but I figured it would a more practical option, but really I'm seeking other people's experiences with dark floors. Re: Staining timber floors almost black 6Oct 08, 2014 6:44 pm Very loosely there are 3 types of finishes/sealers you can be looking at. Assuming the stain the floor direct, then you can seal the floor with a Hardwax Oil, a Water based polyurethane or a Solvent based polyurethane. The Poly's tend to help 'pop' the stain a bit more, whereas the Hardwax Oils 'sit-in' the floor a bit more. Most people tend to lean towards a Satin finish. There is another alternative, you could also just directly paint the floor black with a Dulux type water based paint and then seal that. There will be no timber feature coming through, but the floor will be black. Re: Staining timber floors almost black 7Oct 09, 2014 9:42 am Thanks for the information. I definitely want the grain to show through, so what would be my best option? Renovating and creating a small extension to a 1930s Spanish Mission with the help of an architect. Re: Staining timber floors almost black 8Oct 09, 2014 10:43 am Hi Gidgetbeach, May I make a couple of suggestions. Lobasol HS 2K Impact Oil Color. It is a true burnishing Oil. You heat it up and burning it into the timber. A magnificent natural look. You can Stain the floor with there Active color first. Now Jarrah tends not to accept stain well when trying to make it Black. So there are tricks like putting a piece of steel wool in the Active color and leaving it over night. That will get your floor a nice even black and pop the grain. Then it needs to be sanded back the next day with a green pad. Then you trowel the burnishing Oil on, then wait 20 mns, and heat it up and burnish it into the wood. Then repeat the trowel again. For a very Natural timber look. Of course you use the Black color impact Oil as well if you want it really Black. Regards Mark. Floor Sanding Brisbane with The Perfect Process. Only at Quicksand & Polish. Mark. I had a look online at the product and saw a few photos on their Facebook page of the black, though they were applying it in the photos so it was hard to see the final finish. The product looks excellent though and great that it is all natural. Renovating and creating a small extension to a 1930s Spanish Mission with the help of an architect.
