Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Aug 09, 2014 5:48 pm Hi We are building a single storey home and will be self installing Bamboo in the bedrooms. Tiles will be installed professionally in the common areas - Hallway, Family, Meals, Kitchen. This is being done post handover. Builder (Clarendon Homes) will install wet area tiles (Ensuite, Bathroom, Laundry) Pretty much all Bamboo is 14mm height. Add 2mm underlay which leaves a finished height of 16mm. Can anyone tell what the most common finish height of Porcelain tiles is ? What level should we ask the Builder to start the door and door frames at ? I am told by someone already building with Clarendon that they install doors 28mm above the concrete slab. Would that be OK ? That would leave a 12mm gap between the Bamboo and doors. Looking for some guidance as this floor finish level has got me confused ! Re: Finished floor levels Tile vs Bamboo 2Sep 02, 2014 8:15 pm I'd be getting the doors done at the height of the 2 different levels. Bamboo and tiles, you have the Bamboo sorted, now you need to ask your builder this question, this will depend on how the tiles are laid. Concrete bed and how high or rubber based? I am more concerned about the doors where the Bamboo and Tiles meet. These will be the entry doors to all the bedrooms. Inside the bedrooms will be bamboo, outside will be Tiles ! What do I do there ? Re: Finished floor levels Tile vs Bamboo 4Sep 03, 2014 5:15 am Take your Bamboo out level with the external architrave. Go to a flooring store, and look at the door trims they have for that purpose. I'm not sure if I have a photo of one on my computer. I'll have a look for you tonight. Quite often with a 14mm flooring you WILL have a hight rise to deal with. And that's the brand we sell also "Premium". You'll be looking for a "Border" I'd say. I am doing either 600 mm tiles or timber flooring throughout house. I met few tilers and visited tiles suppliers as well. 600mm tiles requires 40mm finished floor. It also require to raise kitchen and benchtop height by about 40 mm to accomodate 600mm tiles. Some tilers says they will do first sand and cement base ( about 15 to 20 mm) and 600 mm tiles is about 12 mm. so total about 30 to 35 mm. One tiler said he can do without sand and cement base, will use high quality glue. I do not know which is better. I asked my builder about finished floor height but no reply yet. I think builder was doing 400mm (8mm thick) tiles as per contract so finished floor would be approximately 12 to 15 mm. Do not know what to do ?? Your help is appreciated !! Re: Finished floor levels Tile vs Bamboo 8Sep 07, 2014 11:34 am 600mm tiles will most definately need sand cement (dunno about using the high quality glue part), so that will be a finished height of about 35mm. 40 might be 5mm too high ! Who is your builder ? I am with Clarendon and they charge $500 (from memory) to raise door frames and doors from 28mm to 35mm. This price also includes their carpenter and painter to come back after tiles are done and install and paint the skirting. Re: Finished floor levels Tile vs Bamboo 9Sep 08, 2014 7:08 pm @Sydney-build, I am building with New Living Homes. Tiles in wet areas will be done by builders. I found TFO is very reasonable for 600mm porcelian tiles but tilers are very expensive so I am considering bamboo flooring across house, NO CARPET at all. I know you have decided putting bamboo flooring by your self. Are you in building industry ? Who is your bamboo supplier and how much it cost you? What about skirting ? Will it be done before flooring or after ? If before then will be only nailed or permatenately fixed? Bamboo flooring requires 16 mm finished floor so I may not require raising kitchen and benchtop heaight. I heard you can find them from $35-$40 onwards. How will you treat any water spills especially in the Kitchen ? Water is not good for bamboo. We are not doing full bamboo for the same reason. I know you have decided putting bamboo flooring by your self. Are you in building industry ? No, but I have installed laminate before. Hence I thought I could give it a go. Who is your bamboo supplier and how much it cost you? I haven't decided on a supplier yet, but the cheapest quote I have got so far is from floorboardsonline.com.au. Very god price on the Verdura, which we will be going for. What about skirting ? Will it be done before flooring or after ? If before then will be only nailed or permatenately fixed? I can pay $500 to my builder and they will come back later and fix the skirting and paint it as well, if I am doing tiles post handover. For this amount I could also raise the door height to 35mm if I wanted to, from the standard 28mm. This is to cater for porcelain tiles. Bamboo flooring requires 16 mm finished floor so I may not require raising kitchen and benchtop heaight. Yeah, for bamboo, you do not need to raise kitchen benchtop height. It should be 900mm finished. So make sure your builder installs kitchen benchtop at a height of 916mm. Hi, have purchased a house with 2 single garage doors.
