Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 28, 2008 12:59 pm We selected our carpet yesterday! Exciting...
I was wondering if anyone (Ash you there??) knows anything about this carpet and whether we got a good deal. It's made by Godfrey Hirst, and it's called Grange #4 (I think #4 is the colour), and it is 100% nylon (the salesman steered us away from wool as hubby has asthma and allergies). It looks a bit like a sisal and feels very soft. Caramel in colour. It was on special at $105 per metre plus labour, and we are getting Platinum underlay for $19 per metre. The carpet will go in all 4 bedrooms, study and formal lounge. Is this a good carpet, and did we get a good deal? thanks in advance Re: Is this carpet any good? 2May 28, 2008 2:55 pm Hi Donuts,
Provide carpet specs and I'll comment. There are thousands of carpets out there. Sorry, but I don't have time to hunt for specs. BTW Don't presume that a wool carpet isn't suitable for allergy sufferers. In most cases, it is fine. Do you know whether he is specifically affected by wool? There are tests that can determine this. Ash. Re: Is this carpet any good? 3May 28, 2008 6:23 pm Thanks Ash. We're going back on Friday to select tiles, so I'll ask for the specs then. What specs in particular do you need?
My husband has been tested, he has mild allergic reactions to just about everything (cats, pollen, dust etc) so I would not be surprised if he reacted to wool too. In any case he felt much more comfortable choosing nylon because of this. Thanks again Re: Is this carpet any good? 4May 28, 2008 11:55 pm What type on nylon yarn? (Try to find out if it is nylon 6 or nylon 6,6).
Dye method (Solution dyed)? Weight (eg. 28oz, 36oz)? Pile construction (cut, twist pile, loop, multi-level etc)? Secondary backing type? Any and all specs available!? Ash. Re: Is this carpet any good? 5Jun 02, 2008 3:55 pm Hi Ash,
I have got the specs of the carpet ... a couple of questions she wasn't sure of but have got probable answers and she's going to get back to me to make sure, so here we go with what we've got so far: What type on nylon yarn? (Try to find out if it is nylon 6 or nylon 6,6). Probably 6 Dye method (Solution dyed)? Not solution dyed - starts off white and dyed later on. Weight (eg. 28oz, 36oz)? Probably 28oz Pile construction (cut, twist pile, loop, multi-level etc)? Cut and loop Secondary backing type? Not sure yet... Does this help you comment at all? If not happy to wait till we get real answers! thanks Ash! Re: Is this carpet any good? 6Jun 02, 2008 4:01 pm Is this the sales person that can only give you a "probably" answer??? Do they know what they are selling???!!!!
I'm beginning to understand what Ash has been trying to say about carpet salespeople!!! Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Re: Is this carpet any good? 8Jun 02, 2008 4:22 pm It will probably have a jute backing. I'd expect it to be an OK carpet for the budget. You could spend a lot more for better quality, but that's not to say it won't be fine.
If layed well on premium underlay, and looked after, it could give you about 12-15 years of life before it is looking sad enough for you to want to replace it. Within a few years, you will find gradual tracking in the traffic ways, as it loses colour slightly and abrasion of the fibres make it look a little drab. It is the type of carpet that often is sold to young families, as its nice & soft, has good stain resistance, inexpensive, and can be replaced after the family have grown. Care: Have a good upright HEPA vacuum, clean up spills etc quickly, have it cleaned by a qualified tech every 12-18 months. After about the third clean, having Teflon reapplied will help to maintain its stain resistant properties. Don't use non-approved chemicals on it. Ash. Re: Is this carpet any good? 10Jun 02, 2008 7:53 pm royalblue Care: Have a good upright HEPA vacuum. Hi Ash, Something I've been wondering about. My parents were told some time ago when they purchased their new carpet that the warranty was only valid if they used an upright vacuum cleaner. We currently have an old upright which we are happy with (except that it is very heavy) but we were considering a ducted vacuum system for the new house. What do you recommend and are there really warranty issues if you don't use an upright vacuum cleaner? Thanks 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: Is this carpet any good? 11Jun 03, 2008 1:50 am Warrantys and conditions will vary from carpet to carpet and with different manufacturers.
You should follow the advice given by the manufacturer of your carpets, which will be along the same lines as the Aust Standard 3733:1995. The fact is, uprights are more aggressive and effective at removing embedded soil. However, a dense pile carpet that holds the soil mostly near the top and is vacuumed regularly with a standard vacuum will still be OK. Constantly vaccing with an upright may well be overkill, and hasten wear of some carpets. Avoid regular vaccing of loop pile wool carpets with uprights. The Standard actually advises against uprights with loop pile carpets. Ash. Thank you. Do I use timber floorboards for stairs or do people use timber treads? Or is both the same? 6 7271 1 11003 1 15753 |
