Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 07, 2014 9:06 pm Hi, Our sub floor is plasterboard/particleboard and old pine floor in some areas under the carpet. We are getting prefinished spotted gum (tongue and groove). One installer suggested having a builder's plastic on the sub-floor, then floors would be nailed. Another said not to use plastic, but to use Bolstic Ultraset to glue down floor AND nails. The clearance between the ground and sub-floor is about 50cm at the lowest place. Should we use builder's plastic? I read somewhere this too can create mold/moisture over time and damage the sub-floor. Does the floor need to be glued AND nailed? We are new and confused after taking to installers and appreciate any suggestions. Thank you. Re: Prefinished timber floor - glued, nailed or both? 2Jun 07, 2014 9:40 pm subfloor plasterboard? particleboard? can you post some pics? If your floor is no good already then plastic wont help. It might pay to check your sub floor is adequatly ventilated and check the moisture content of the current substrate. Re: Prefinished timber floor - glued, nailed or both? 3Jun 09, 2014 9:57 pm Thank you. See the pictures. Sub-floor has been checked. it is in very good condition, no damage and has very good ventilation. http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag399/henade/IMG_20140609_104553_zps647ccffa.jpg http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag399/henade/IMG_20140609_103912_zps2ad7f1e4.jpg Re: Prefinished timber floor - glued, nailed or both? 4Jun 09, 2014 10:50 pm In my experience, the glue used these days is powerful enough on its own, but it's best to (secret) nail as well as it will help keep the floor down while glue sets, and help holding any bent boards straight. If your using engineered boards with a spotted gum veneer i would expect them to be straight anyway, and the ply backing on these boards is generally more stable in case of moisture. It's hard to see the scenario in your pics, if you need more advice maybe try zoom out a bit so we can get a better idea. Re: Prefinished timber floor - glued, nailed or both? 5Jun 17, 2014 4:46 pm Hi Kmranu, Plastic is only necessary for concrete slabs, and it goes underneath your subfloor. The pine ply subfloor you have is excellent and secret nailing is the best as it allows the boards to naturally move with the seasons. Spot gluing is more about an elastomeric noise resistance, rather than holding. Its done in lines rather than trowling the glue on like when gluing partquetry to concrete. Gluing long lengths of timber down is always a bad idea. Parquetry is very short blocks. No pressure when shrinking. Timber wants to move with the seasons, let it. The particleboard subfloor is not as good, but commonly used. Still secret nail is best. You don't want pressure to build and something has to give. I am happy to talk you through this via phone if you are still confused. Regards Mark. Floor Sanding Brisbane with The Perfect Process. Only at Quicksand & Polish. Mark.
