Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Mar 02, 2014 10:51 am Hi All, Our house has some water damage from an en suite shower which leaked prior to us purchasing it. We are in a position where the shower has now been repaired, but the floor area in our bedroom outside where it leaked is now squeaking quite loudly when we walk on it. Its not a big area where the squeak occurs, but it is right in the path to walk to the bed and with a little one we find ourselves jumping over it at night to avoid waking the little one up. I have not lifted the carpet to see what the damage looks like yet. My questions are: 1) I know it is hard to say without knowing what the damage is like underneath, but is this something i will be able to do? I am pretty handy and believe i have or have access to all the required tools. 2) If not, who should we contact? Do i need to contact a builder or do you think a handy man would be able to do it (If i am going with a handy man, i guess that would just be because they'd have more experience with it and for the ease of not having to worry about it myself. 3) Assuming joists aren't damaged, i assume it is just a case of replacing boards? 4) If joists are damaged, how is this done? It is a two story house, the area that is damaged is above the garage. Roughly a 2m long by 1 metre wide area that is squeaking. Are you able to roughly guesstimate the cost involved with this? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Re: Floor water damage 2Mar 02, 2014 3:41 pm If the boards squeak when you walk on it it could be termite damage. I lifted the carpet and whilst the boards were slightly warped from where water had clearly gotten into them, they looked ok. After watching what happened when someone walked on the boards it was as per what I expected. The nails were no longer holding the board down properly and the board was squeaking on the nail when it moved up and down. So I whacked a few countersunk screws in right next to where the nails were and now it is as good as new.... Actually, probably better! there was an event. The question is whether the builder had the insurance and whether the event was covered. The workmanship is a separate conversation. 10 23701 I thought this would be a popular question but I haven't been able to find any similar posts. Perhaps I'm wording my searches wrong?
