Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 18, 2008 4:23 pm Hi
I am just about to order floating timber floorbaords in either Sydney Blue Gum or Jatoba and was wondering where is the best place to buy them in Melbourne. Also I know Fowels sell a brand called Embelton and other places have Boral Silkwood range. What is better , is there much difference? Some come with underlay included is it important to have a certain type of underlay if so what is the best one to get? I feel there are a lot of people putting in floating floorboards but we dont have difinitve answers on these questions on the forum. Please someone in the know or whhas gone through the process of laying the floors in recent months or years give us a heads up on what is the best way to go about it and the tricks of the trade. Cheers Rowan Re: FINAL WORD ON TIMBER FLOATING FLOORBOARDS 2May 18, 2008 4:37 pm Hi Rowan,
I'm looking for either Sydney Blue Gum or Jatoba as well. One tip I learned from a tradesman is to look for the thickness of the topmost layer - can't recall what that is called technically. See to it that the top thickness is no less than 4mm. Less than that may mean that you cannot sand it later on. You're just going to chuck it off and replace. I'll be interested in other info as well. cheers, Hannah Re: FINAL WORD ON TIMBER FLOATING FLOORBOARDS 3May 23, 2008 4:42 pm Hi Rowan,
We are also looking into floating floors in Sydney Blue Gum and we were looking at either Boral Silkwook or Embelton, but we also cannot get an answer on what the difference is between the two. To me the products seem the same, both have 4mm top layer, and I think Embelton is slightly cheaper. I do know the Embelton factory is in Coburg and you can buy direct from them, they will also give you names of layers who would be able to buy the product at trade price for you, which would cost you even less. But at the moment we are undecided, as we don't know which is the better product, I have tried to do lots of research on the internet, but sometimes too much information is a bad thing.......gets very confusing and everyone has their own ideas. One tradesmand told me of two clients he had, one layed the best possible timber flooring and did everything perfect, the other did a cheapy job, in the end the first client's floor buckled and was ruined and the cheap one worked out just fine......so maybe it's just pot luck! So basically we are wanting the same questions as you asnwered, we really like both products and cannot decide on which would be better, or even if there is a differnce. So ANYONE please help us! I went out to the factory today in Northcote today and it was shut but it did not look like it was really for customers to buy from. Did you just ring them direct and get a quote. If so what is their price per sq metre and how much to lay. Any advise you have gathered so far will be great as we are both looking for the same floating Sydney Blue Gum floors. If not them who has been your best quote so far on either the boral or the Cheers Rowan Re: FINAL WORD ON TIMBER FLOATING FLOORBOARDS 7May 25, 2008 12:25 pm Hi Rowan/CMT,
Have a look at the Sydney Blue Gum of Harvey Norman. They're on special right now. They're Sydney Blue Gum is 5mm thick and their quote is reasonable with the discount. I've narrowed my criteria to these factors: 1) quality - that's durability and looks ( I'll be walking on it everyday ) 2) reputable installers 3) price .... in that order. I'll be paying big bucks anyway. Might as well make me happy in the end For stores, I've been eyeing on the following: 1) Harvey Norman (with the discount of course) 2) Bamboo and Timber Select ( very nice people, Ken and Lyn) 3) Solomon's Flooring (they have good ranges on carpets, too) 4) *** ....preference not in that order, but based on my factors as stated above. This is just my personal opinion that I want to share. Do have a look and hope this helps.... cheers, Hannah Thanks Simon, I guess I'm no concerned with the volume of the noise rather that dead and hollow sound and feel that is associated with floating floors. But I'm not sure… 3 6085 Thanks, that's the motivation I needed to give it a try sooner rather than one day! 4 2982 Hi All New to the forum and looking for some advice, has anyone else renovated an old miners cottage in or around Ballarat and been able to identify the flooring?
