Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering Re: Anyone else not carpeting bedrooms? 41Aug 17, 2014 1:45 am I'm asthmatic and I don't think carpet makes it worse. But we vacuum every day and once a fortnight or so we use the Bissell carpet cleaner. The water does come out black which is horrifying. At least with a rug you can take it out into the sun, which kills dust mites. Re: Anyone else not carpeting bedrooms? 42Aug 18, 2014 8:48 pm worktime My mum believes tiles/timber flooring is better for asthmatics, but that's just purely from her "personal viewpoint", however research reveals something completely different... Quote: A 15-year Swedish study found no link between carpet and allergy and asthma attacks. In fact, when carpet usage in Sweden decreased by 70 percent, allergy reactions in the general population increased by 30 percent. In 2003, a study of school children in New Jersey found that having carpet in a child’s bedroom was associated with fewer missed school days and less need for asthma medication. These are just two of many studies showing no correlation between carpet and allergies or asthma. How carpet helps asthma and allergy sufferers So if carpet isn’t contributing to allergy and asthma problems, how is it helping those with the conditions? Carpet acts much like a filter, trapping allergens and keeping them out of the air you and your family breathe. These trapped allergens, such as pollen, pet dander and dust, can then easily be removed through proper cleaning techniques. Shall we take personal anecdotal evidence over facts? This study fails to mention that the allergens in the carpet can be easily disturbed when walking and moving things along the carpet, which then goes into the air space. Often. The thing with Carpet is that while it traps the allergens, the allergens build up - Unlikely tiles or Carpet, while they may float in the air, it's easier to maintain and get rid of with regular cleaning. Also the thing with Asthma isn't just allergens. It's dust mites. Dust mites live and breed in carpet, they do not sustain life on tiles or floor boards. For anyone who have kids with Asthma, it's an absolute no brainer to get rid of carpet. $395 Fixed Priced Landscape Plans for DA M: 0435 127 244 | W: bluegumdesign.com.au | E: info@bluegumdesign.com.au Residential | Commercial | Industrial Re: Anyone else not carpeting bedrooms? 43Aug 19, 2014 3:09 pm Be aware that vinyl flooring may contain VOCs (as do many new carpets) and can 'off gas' for quite a while. If you wanted to avoid carpets, hardwood floorboards, with a quality rug might be the best option, although obviously more expensive. If you get your carpets regually cleaned you won't have the issue with trapped allergens being released and they can get rid of dust mites etc at the same time (from a resale perspective after 5 years carpet in kids bedrooms, if also used as a playroom can get quite stained / worn).
