Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 03, 2008 4:30 pm I live in the top floor of a 4 Unit Strata- 2 downstairs and 2 up stairs.
In an effort to enchance the Unit, prior to being put on the market, the owner of the Unit beneath me, removed the carpet, stained and varnished the Floorboards. Not surprisingly, with the boards stained in "JapaneseBlack", he had no takers and withdrew the Unit from Sale and got Tenants in. Other than being noisy neighbours, who have little if any regard to Strata By-Laws, the Unit remains with no floor coverings. The present disturbance will be dealt with at a upcoming Strata meeting. But I digress. As I will be replacing my carpet in the near future, I'm interested in hearing comments regarding carpet underlay. I understand that there is underlay designed for Units but I have also been informed of "special soundproofing underlay" to alleviate my present dilemma. I'd like to hear (no pun intended) of it's usefullness. But I will wait till you get my message before I move it so you know where it has gone to. I would look at using the Gymnasiums & Aerobics underlay. Its very thick and should have sound proofing properties. http://www.airstep.com.au/products/default.aspx Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Carpet Underlay in Apartments 4May 03, 2008 7:22 pm Hi SS,
An underlay must be matched and suited to the carpet that is laid with it. When it comes to replacing the carpets, look at buying a carpet and underlay combination that suits you, and has good acoustic insulation qualities. It is probably the choice of carpet more than the underlay that can have the most effect. I think a thick, dense wool carpet will make a big difference, matched with a suitable underlay. Here's some info... http://www.carpetinstitute.com.au/downl ... oustic.pdf To be honest, I'm not sure what underlay has the optimum acoustic qualities. I have heard that there are some new wool underlays that are excellent. Best thing may be to speak directly with the big suppliers, such as Bridgestone, and ask what is the best. Ash. Re: Carpet Underlay in Apartments 5May 09, 2008 8:56 pm This is a hard one.
Acoustic underlays do exist:- http://www.soundguard.com.au/htdocs/silentstep.htm http://www.damtec.com.au/application-timber-substrate IMLE*, over a good high density underlay, an acoustic underlay will not make much difference by itself. It may have a reasonable effect on low level sound like a speaking voice. Obviously carpet and underlay will be better than just floor boards but don't expect it to cut out all noise. Someone running up a hall, banging doors, playing doof doof music will still come through. If you were starting from scratch a sound proof plaster and some type of insulating material would be a wise investment. *In my limited experience Hi l plan to install a self adhesive vinyl plank floor. l first need to attach masonite boards underlay to by plywood subfloor of my house. What size nails and how many… 0 8370 Jimbo73 I would use heaps of adhesive on each sheet and screw rather than nail. use as many as you like cheers Simeon 1 4064 1 11003 |
