Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 14, 2013 6:08 pm Hi there, We are looking at Eurplank flooring, actually we are getting it, but haven't yet decided if we are getting the midi range or standard europlank. Midi is 12.7mmm thick with a 2mm wear layor - 20 year wear guarnantee, cheaper standard is 14.5mm thick with a 4mm wear layor - 30 year wear guarantee What I don't know is how often you need to resand and refinish. If we have to resand every 5 or 10 years than the 2mm won't last as long obviously and it might be more cost effective just to get the 4mm..... Has anyone any experience with Europlank or similar. I guess even hardwood flooring - how often does that require resanding? Re: Engineered Hardwood - EUROPLANK , care wear and timefram 2Jun 15, 2013 7:15 am In reality the vast majority of people do not resand at all. It's something talked about when buying a floor, but its also something that's inconvenient to do (move all the furniture out) and expensive so it gets put off. The third reason sanding a floor is in reality a non issue is that you learn to live with the timber floors character, meaning the dents and scratches become a part of the floor and don't bother you after a while. If.....and it's a big if, you actually do resand, then the amount of veneer that you go into is dependant on the quality of the sander operator and the damage he or she is trying to sand out. What should always be the case is that the surface coating is simply being replaced or spruced up, not the veneer. Just a footnote on warranties. They are only worth the paper they are written on if the company is still around in 30 years to warrant them. As 95% of flooring is imported, this is a real issue for Australians and with several flooring retailers closing down EVERY MONTH in Australia, choose your supplier carefully. Hope that info has helped out. Re: Engineered Hardwood - EUROPLANK , care wear and timefram 3Jun 15, 2013 7:49 am Thank you. Sort of clearer. So by replacing the surface coating we don't actually sand the boards back, just clean and reapply whatever it is we need to? I think this is where we are getting confused, we were thinking that when it says every 5 to 10 years hardwood flooring needs refinishing that we have to sand back, meaning the 2mm would only last 20 years at very most. We plan to live in this house for at least 30 + years. Re: Engineered Hardwood - EUROPLANK , care wear and timefram 4Jun 15, 2013 10:56 am We have a .6mm product that has a 25 year wear warranty so yes, you tidy up the coating not the actual wood! But as already stated, it's rare for anyone to bother as its a BIG logistical issue to resand a floor. At point of sale it's asked every time but in reality it hardly ever happens.
