Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 15, 2013 1:21 pm Hey all. Enough time has passed since i put my bamboo floor in that i am willing to start the decision making process again in regards to carpeting my 2 bedrooms. I'm walking into this with no idea about what i am looking for so i would love a little help. The bedrooms are around the 10m2 each and have some horrendously old 80's style carpet in them at the moment. I am looking to put in something that is nice and hardwearing whilst still being pretty soft and luxurious. I'm planinng on doing the rounds to a few places over the next week or so but would like a little info under my belt first. So... what can you tell me? Re: What do i need to know about carpet? 2May 15, 2013 9:49 pm Save yourself time by visiting your local Harvey Norman Flooring franchisee and ask to see Smartstrand Silk by Mohawk. Google it. Read the forum here about it. It's the most amazingly soft, yet durable carpet in the world at the moment and its also brilliant with stains (lifetime warranty) and fading from the sun (25 year warranty). Made using 37% corn, it's the worlds most technically superior carpet fibre by miles. NOTE: if you do buy it, and install it on Dunlop Cloud 9 Cumulus Underlay, you may find it is softer than your bed !!! I am currently about to put down a deposit for Carpet at Harvey Norman. However, after many weeks of reading these and other fine forums to learn as much as I can about carpet and underlays (I am a first time buyer of carpet) I am stuck. I was originally going to buy the Dunlop Cloud 9 Underlay - Cummulus, the thickest Underlay at 11mm. However, after speaking to Dunlop directly about the specifications of the Underlays offered at Harvey Norman, its density is 95kg/m2. The Dunlop Cloud 9 Underlay 9mm version called Stratus, has the same density but is $4 cheap per 1.8 metres or $8 per 1 whole Linear metre (as some posters will know, you need twice as much underlay as per 1 Linear metre, means you need twice as much underlay, if that sounds confusing to some, well... it is, but I am over it now, retail is clearly a cutthroat business). Now, I am doing my whole house because we had a burst water pipe, which of course, the insurance only covers the main dining room which was flooded... leaving the rest of the house with slightly different carpet at best. Anyway, I am attempting to carpet 43 Linear metres. So I could theoretically save $344 on the 9mm underlay, while only loosing the slightly softer feel of the more expensive 11mm underlay. Very eager to hear opinions and thoughts?? Also, while I am here, can anyone give me a ball park figure on what I should be able to get discount wise, when buying carpet per sqm2? ie - at $38 per metre - at $42 per metre - at $49 per metre etc? As I feel I am buying quite a lot of carpet so should be able to haggle a bit. Lastly I have noticed that there is a Harvey Norman representative on this forum, if they read this, could they please explain if Harvery Norman is willing to sell the other Dunlop underlays, as I would prefer to buy the Dunlop Ultimate, as its 10mm, with 120kg/m2 density, or over 25% denser underlay than Harvey Normans top model? If Harvey Norman is not able to sell the Dunlop Ultimate, where would I buy it from? Any carpet dealer, or is their a particular store that offers great prices? (I live in the Geelong Area). Thank you all. Re: What do i need to know about carpet? 4Nov 10, 2013 9:48 pm The Cloud 9 Stratus underlay, as you say, is the same density and only a little lower, so you won't notice a gigantic difference. In respect to other Dunlop underlay's, yes we can supply them. Your local stores in Geelong can order them in for you, although as standard they stock the three Cloud 9 underlays. I'm respect to discounts, we have sales regularly for various products and the independent franchisees will always be keen to negotiate a deal for you to win your business. In regards to your underly it can be more important than your carpet, always get the best possible. and if you are on a budget lower the quality of your carpet instead, underlay is your support, you need this to be the best it possibly can be. I had an old shower unit that broke on me and when I took it off, there were only 2 water pipes, instead of the normal 2 water pipes and a shower head pipe.
