Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Mar 09, 2013 2:46 pm Hi everyone, we have all but accepted that whichever builder we go with, we will likely have to do the floors after handover to get the type of flooring we would like. If we go with a floating floor and we don't want the scotia all around the edges, I gather the skirting will have to be left off and cut and painted on the areas that aren't carpeted. However, will the skirting on the areas with the floating floor then sit higher than on the carpeted areas? If so, can anyone suggest any solutions? Thanks. We put the skirtings on after the boards went down. No issues here. Re: Leaving skirting off to lay flooring -advice please 3Mar 09, 2013 3:06 pm Were the carpets in your house laid during the build process? If so, do you think they would put skirtings on after carpets? Because we were thinking of also having the carpets laid post handover, do you think it best to leave those skirtings off too? It just adds to the workload if we do need to do those ones too..... If you ever decide to replace the carpet in the future it will be an easy process. You wont notice the slight deference in height between the carpet skirt and the laminate skirt. Re: Leaving skirting off to lay flooring -advice please 5Mar 09, 2013 4:28 pm The only possible issue would be if you had a room that has a carpet/ floating floor junction along one continuous wall. Otherwise with rooms divided by doorways, the slight difference would not be noticable, as others have said. Re: Leaving skirting off to lay flooring -advice please 6Mar 09, 2013 6:20 pm Thanks everyone. We thought that to make sure it won't be noticeable we can just have the floating floor in all of the rooms with open entryways (sorry, I'm sure there is a technical term for this) such as the study and TV area. Then only the bedrooms are carpet, reducing the problem of the height difference as there will be doorways as you have suggested. Our carpet installer put an mdf ramp in (underneath the carpet) to meet the carpet and the bamboo levels. Re: Leaving skirting off to lay flooring -advice please 8Mar 10, 2013 4:44 am jodge, thanks for that. We will be just having an underlay over the slab, but it still might be good to have the bamboo laid and then the carpet, so the carpet installer could possibly do something like that if he/she needed to. Our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64705 Re: Leaving skirting off to lay flooring -advice please 9Mar 10, 2013 4:06 pm The heights of your floor will vary depending on what product you decide to use. Bamboo on an underlay can vary between 12mm to 16mm (using a 2mm underlay) depending where you get your bamboo from. Carpet likewise can vary greatly depending on the style. With ours we have a height of 30mm including underlay. I would think most builders and carpet layers would insist on skirting boards down first so they lay up to the skirt. My preference is for the skirting to go on after a floating floor is laid so that the edges are hidden, but there are ways around this. The most important thing is to know what product you are using where so that you don't have any surprises.
