It is their responsibility, and it sounds like they need to return and finish it off better, but I need to see it to know just what the situation is. Ash. Re: question about newly laid carpet 6Apr 16, 2008 12:46 am Ash,
(and clath) Not wanting to thread hijack but this is a good question for this topic too i though. Is there a problem with this? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ At the end of the join it is like the carpet was cut at a bit of an angle and this was the result. Here is a close up: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I have also asked for clarification of this too. In the master bedroom there is a unexplainable join in a high traffic area which appears to be there for no good reason. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ My best guess is that the layer ran out of length and joined 2 pieces together and came up with this. I wonder if this is the norm? If it was in one of the kids bedrooms etc I wouldn't mind but after just 4 months of normal traffic ithe join is becoming quite noticable. Is there a requirement for trafficable areas? Re: question about newly laid carpet 7Apr 16, 2008 1:17 am Matt, YES there's a problem (or two).
The seam appears to not be done well near the edge. Should be simple enough for a competent layer to fix (from what I can tell). The positioning of seams in the traffic way is not good. You should have been provided with a laying plan by the contractor, that showed where joins will be, and you should have been consulted and agreed to the positioning of seams. I have a hard copy of the Aust Standard. (A/NZS 2455.1:2007) Among other refs, in Section 3.3.1 Seaming & Joining; (j) Wherever possible, cross-joins shall not be placed in main traffic ways. Later clauses state that the consumer shall be consulted & agree before proceeding with any such seams. Ash. I know an accredited Woolsafe carpet inspector in Melbourne that can provide an unbiased professional report if you want. The inspection & report will cost, but can be a valuable tool in having it dealt with properly. His name is Michael Mulquinney. Re: question about newly laid carpet 8Apr 16, 2008 1:25 am Ash,
Thanks mate! I have an inspection from the owner of the company that laid the carpet tomorrow or Thursday and will take you up on the offer if need be after that appointment. There are several other issues that need attention but none that will be raised at this point in time. Appreciate your help as usual! Re: question about newly laid carpet 9Apr 16, 2008 1:49 am I'd suggest you raise every single issue at the inspection.
Remember, there are few carpets that are laid completely in accordance to the industry Standard for laying. You as the paying consumer are entitled to things being done properly. Ash. In an ideal world there would not be any threads showing. In reality there will always be some. Vacuuming reveals many little issues. Don't pull them as previously stated, cut them if you feel the need to do so. I would like to think that a representative of the flooring company would only be too happy to attend to this for you. mattwalker, The first picture is a classic example of a join that has some pile caught in the heat bond tape and is also slightly gapped at the end. This is caused by the end of the heat bond tape (where it runs over the smoothedge strip) not being heated enough to bond, and actually hold the carpet together. It certainly could be improved The second picture is an absolute joke. There is no way that there should be a join there if it's all as you've described. I hope you haven't paid the account as yet. I'd like to know how they try and explain that one away. The carpet layer told me that the laying is guaranteed for 2 yrs Re: question about newly laid carpet 20Apr 18, 2008 10:48 am ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have an inspection from the owner of the company that laid the carpet tomorrow or Thursday and will take you up on the offer if need be after that appointment.
