Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jan 30, 2013 10:41 am Our patio was tiled 20 months ago and we noticed recently that a couple of tiles have started to lift and numerous others are hollow underneath. The tiling shop reprentative has been out to have a look and took a tile with him to try to match. We have 12 leftover tiles (40 x 40) however these are unlikely to be sufficient to complete the job. So, what are our rights regarding replacement tiles? If they are unable to find matching tiles what are our options? Is there a certain % of area that can be just "sort of matching" as per building regulations? Reference to any of the relevant building regulations clauses would be gratefully accepted. I have read from earlier threads that there should be an expansion joint every 5 metres, and I note there is no expansion joint in our tiles. Is this a requirement for outdoor tiles? If so, do you have reference to the relevant building regulations? Thanks Re: Patio tiles lifting and hollow underneath-options and ri 2Jan 31, 2013 7:19 am You may still be able to use the existing tiles, that is if they come off in one piece and you can have a tiler re stick them down. You will also need to know what has caused them to be hollow. Are they stuck directly to the concrete? If so then it maybe the tile adhesive ( thinset ) if not enough adhesive or wrong glue has been used. In regards to the expansion gap every 5 metres I an unsure as I thought it was 20 metres. Speak to the tiler. If they are lifting you can reuse the tiles. ShaneG We have been doing heaps of hybrid floors lately. The hollowness is caused by low spots in the slab or subfloor.
