Rubber apparently wear's thin and will lose it's cushioning over time. I have laid carpet in apartments that must have the thin sound deadening rubber installed before installing the actual job. felt underlay is probably best interms of sound deadening, however the new stuff is very different from the old stuff, so shop around for it to find the old felt and not the new felt.
