Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Apr 11, 2008 12:54 pm Ash, in our new home we are having a large room which is a dedicated play / toy room for the little munchkins. It is around 4500mm by 5500mm and opens by double cavity sliding doors onto our kitchen / dining / living area. This area will be covered with some sort of timber flooring - more then likely floating timber in shades of merbau.
The toy room will also have a large sliding door (2118mm) opening out onto the back patio / pergola area leading to our pool. Now the kiddies are currently 2.5yr and not quite 1yr old and the room will not have any furniture (other then kiddy toy furniture) - all will be soft furnishings like beanbags with TV wall-mounted so they can't touch it!! We saw some really colourful rubber flooring in a carpet showroom which felt nice and bouncy - which we thought would be easy to keep clean and soft on small bodies. What would you recommend? The walls will be something like Chalk White with the kitchen being white with Ming blue countertops. Dining / lounge area will be creamy / pale blue / chocolate tonings. Any help would be appreciated. Re: Another Question for Ash.... 2Apr 11, 2008 3:53 pm Hi Kyton,
You've described the place in detail, but I'm afraid I'm not exactly sure what kind of advice you're looking for. You've decided on a timber floor in the playroom, but you are asking what to have also in the room for some softness, right? Well whatever takes your fancy really! Places like Clark Rubber will have a range of soft play mats, I think I've seen some modular foam mats that snap together that the kids can roll around on. Or you can get vinyl covered foam mattresses, or a thick acrylic floor rug.... whatever you like. Sounds like its an informal kids room, so anything that gives them some softness. Be careful though..... some spongy foam rubber products can be full of toxic gases (formaldehydes etc). Smell any products first to see if it is off-gassing. If so, it should be left outside for a few weeks to gas-off first. Hope that helps! Re: Another Question for Ash.... 3Apr 11, 2008 4:57 pm Sorry about the confusion - no the timber flooring will be in the kitchen / living / dining area - the toy room is a separate room. Will post a picture if it lets me ...... the flooring we saw was like a lino but really thick and spongy (is it called vulcanised?) http://www.safetyfloor.com.au/frame_comcork.html Check out the 'walk easy' range Sounds like quite a good, practical surface! Re: Another Question for Ash.... 7Apr 11, 2008 8:43 pm OK have had a look here http://www.rubberflooring.com.au/prodinfo/features.htm
It is a very durable surface, and quite practical in many ways. However, you might need to invest in some equipment to maintain it, or have a contractor scrub & clean the floor every so often. I'd suggest you you get your hands on samples, and check out the maintenance requirements. This is a fully synthetic product, whereas the one I posted (Comcork) contains cork. I think I'd prefer the one with cork in it. Do your homework! Ash. Hi, Apologies - I know there is plenty out there on this but struggling to put together the puzzle.
