I've just realised how much cold comes up through the floors. Does anyone know whether this happens with floating wooden floors too, or is it just the ordinary wooden floors (probably built around 1940s to 50s) that have the problem?

I imagine that the floor boards of you rental are not on a slab so cold air would get under the house and come up through the floor. I don't think a slab would be like that. Sure it might be cold to touch, but not the same amount of actual cold air coming up.
