Re: Selection Day Tomorrow: Should We Upgrade Our Carpet? 4Apr 08, 2008 10:41 pm On our selection day we basically had to decide everything. Two pieces of advice - have a strong coffee or two in the morning because it is brain straining and charge your camera batteries and take photos of your selections. I took my camera but the batteries died
Also talk through each selection with your partner before you get there so you are on the same page. Fi has moved in!! Re: Selection Day Tomorrow: Should We Upgrade Our Carpet? 5Apr 09, 2008 7:35 am Definately upgrade
Good luck and most importantly...have fun Mrs B Re: Selection Day Tomorrow: Should We Upgrade Our Carpet? 6Apr 09, 2008 11:12 am We went with what we were happiest with, in the builders range, "free carpet", upgraded to the best available underlay, which was an overall cost of $400. it started @ $550.
The way we look at it is we have a in house dog and an 18mth old boy possibly another coming up in the next year or so.... So in about 6 - 7 yrs we will be replacing it any way..... And besides it allowed us to add some additional little upgrades, like nicer toilets, pop up wastes to basins things like that.... So in about 6 - 7 yrs we will be replacing it any way..... Excuse me poking my nose in here It is important (for health reasons) to restrict your dog's access to as much of the house as possible. Sure, a dog can be a valuable member of the family, but a dog can introduce a lot of soil into the home. Oil from its fur, saliva and such can create a lot of contamination, bacteria & odours. These can lead to an unhealthy living environment, which is especially a concern for infants & toddlers. The last dog I had was allowed access to the back family room only, and he had his own carpet mat that he knew was his to lie on. Appropriate maintenance is essential to these areas (such as a HEPA vacuum cleaner). It is a fair plan to buy a basic carpet initially, and replace it as the kids are grown, but not good to allow the carpets to become loaded and unhealthy at any point. Having a dog inside will require a lot of extra maintenance. Ash. Re: Selection Day Tomorrow: Should We Upgrade Our Carpet? 8Apr 09, 2008 11:44 am Thanks ash, but if you knew my misses.... you would know maintenance and cleanliness are not issues around our place... Our only issue is of the OCD variety.....
Our carpets here at the moment are vacuumed 3 times a week, tiles and grouting, mopped and steam moped at the same and professionals in quarterly to give a once over... Also the tiles and grouting are also re sealed when the professionals are in to clean... Probably a little over kill, but who ever said OCD ever did things by halves??? Re: Selection Day Tomorrow: Should We Upgrade Our Carpet? 11Apr 09, 2008 11:43 pm Ok. I'm really showing my ignorance here but why is upgrading the underlay so important? What is the difference between standard and upgraded?
Paul Re: Selection Day Tomorrow: Should We Upgrade Our Carpet? 12Apr 10, 2008 1:16 am The underlay provides an important support for the installed carpet. A dense, firm underlay will give the carpet the best ability to stay put, and last longer. Cheap spongy underlays allow too much compression and movement, leading to a range of problems (split seams, loose edges, delamination, ripples etc).
Ash. Re: Selection Day Tomorrow: Should We Upgrade Our Carpet? 13Apr 10, 2008 11:52 am Thanks Ash, we will probably go the same route as Arkraider then ie. builders carpet with upgraded underlay as we have two toddlers and two indoor cats!
Paul Re: Selection Day Tomorrow: Should We Upgrade Our Carpet? 14Apr 10, 2008 5:53 pm So we decided to stay with the builder's range of carpet and upgrade the underlay. They'll get back to us with the various price changes that will be made as a result of the upgrades we requested.
Fiona Carpet upgrade! 15May 01, 2008 5:24 pm Hi there
Carpet is always a tricky one, buy in my opinion, you should only upgrade the underlay if it's for upstairs. This will help absorb the sound coming through the second floor into the ground floor. As for single storey homes, especially those built on concrete slabs, you may be wasting your money. Good luck with it all! Re: Selection Day Tomorrow: Should We Upgrade Our Carpet? 16May 02, 2008 10:41 pm does the quality of the underlay increase the life of the carpet? Re: Selection Day Tomorrow: Should We Upgrade Our Carpet? 18May 02, 2008 11:11 pm good to know.
We upgraded the underlay so hopefully this will decrease sound carrying from upstairs and increase the life of the carpet. I'm thinking of investing in one of those small portable vacuum cleaners so I don't have to lug out the big one every time there are crumbs on the carpet. Ash, do you know if they are effective?? Re: Selection Day Tomorrow: Should We Upgrade Our Carpet? 19May 02, 2008 11:29 pm A modern carpet sweeper is the best thing for those crumbs.
3M make a very good one. Also rubbermaid (I think). Sometimes a good old mechanical tool does a better job than newfangled electric gadgets! Here's the 3M one http://www3.3m.com/catalog/us/en001/man ... utput_html Not cheap, but a very handy tool for daily pickup of surface soil & bits. No power required, so good for the environment. Here's rubbermaid, much cheaper than the 3M one. http://www.janitorialsupplies4less.com/ ... ath/67_253 Ash.
