Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Apr 07, 2008 8:32 pm 05Apr08 Brintons carpets announced yesterday it was closing its Geelong plant, costing 100 jobs. ONE hundred Geelong workers have lost their jobs following carpet manufacturer Brintons' announcement it will close its Fellmongers Rd plant by the end of June. Cheap Chinese imports, coupled with a high Australian dollar and reduced tariffs meant the plant could no longer compete, Brintons bosses said. But all staff would be paid full entitlements and redundancies, in a deal worked out between unions, staff and company chiefs, they said. Company director Garry Shannon described the job of breaking the news to staff as one of the hardest of his career. "These are people I have worked alongside for many years and I feel their disappointment," Mr Shannon said. "We have been in constant contact with employees over the last few months, so whilst they may have anticipated the news it is still a bit of a shock hearing it confirmed. "I imagine they will take some comfort from the fact their entitlements have been guaranteed." Brintons bosses began working with unions and staff several months ago in a bid to cut costs and compete with cheaper imports. This comes just 18 months after the closure of another major manufacturing plant of woven carpets, Feltex of NZ. Too many folk buying mass produced, mediocre & poor quality floor-coverings, instead of fine quality crafted textiles! Ash. Re: Another one bites the dust! 2Apr 07, 2008 9:37 pm Good to see their entitlements are protected though.
Too many companies going offshore or closing down do the 'belly up' and leave loyal employees in the lurch financially. Re: Another one bites the dust! 3Apr 07, 2008 9:46 pm Things have been tough all round in the building industry!
Brintons carpets are one of the best you will buy, but also one of the most expensive! I have hard time selling to commercial project now; everyone is after a cheap deal. It’s a shame!
