Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Nov 02, 2012 10:57 pm We're about to build our own house and need to pick our flooring. We have tiles priced in but aren't too convinced on tiles. We'd love wood floors but done think our budget will stretch to a good wood flooring so have started to consider vinyl wood look planks. But we're interested in the price difference. We're pretty sure it'll be cheaper then wood floors but will it be a cheaper choice then wood laminate floors? I'm still trying to convince the boy it's the best choice for our budget! Thanks Re: Tile, wood laminate or vinyl planks 3Nov 03, 2012 1:35 pm There are also wood look ceramic tiles around. Re: Tile, wood laminate or vinyl planks 4Nov 03, 2012 1:46 pm If you aren't sure on tiles I would go some wood option definately. Because its much easier to remove a cheap laminate flooring or vinyl and then tile if you decide you want them as opposed to tiling and hating it. A girl I know got tiles and is actually spending $7000 excluding labor on a timber floor to go over the top. So she will have a drop into her wet areas which will remain tiled. But it's too prohibitively expensive to remove the tiles. With the click laminate flooring you can even pull it up and possibly sell it on gum tree. We are going with laminate purely because we are not ready to commit to tiles just yet and because the ones we would commit to cost a fortune!!! The big selling point was if we hate them it will be expensive to change. We managed to pick a few things today so starting to feel better... Tiles aren't very forgiving when you drop something either. I always think they can be noisy as well. The wood look flooring may be the answer. A lot of it will be covered with furnitutre, rugs etc etc anyway. Re: Tile, wood laminate or vinyl planks 8Nov 09, 2012 6:07 pm Saint Mike fmac Thanks for all the feedback. Re: Tile, wood laminate or vinyl planks 9Nov 09, 2012 6:20 pm I had tiles & put laminated on top as in the winter the room was freezing even with air con going. Now building a new house & getting vinyl planks this time as it crosses all the boxes for me. 1. not cold 2. doesn't scratch 3. can use my steam cleaner on it 4. if it gets damaged its just cut out & another piece is glued into place. Using karndean flooring Re: Tile, wood laminate or vinyl planks 10Nov 09, 2012 6:34 pm We went looking at the flooring last weekend and have decided on the vinyl planks. For the reasons you state rosewood. We have it down to 3 colours and now just hoping it isn't too much more then the tiles that were in the build quote! There are already so many other things that we need to find money for at pre-start! Re: Tile, wood laminate or vinyl planks 11Nov 09, 2012 7:22 pm Hiya! I have wood laminate floors and they are beautiful they look like real wood and I admit to having dropped a few things but no visible scratches yet. I did drop a heavy trophy a few days ago and it made a deep gouge, but I bought some putty of roughly the same colour from Bunnings, put it in and let it dry - all fixed! And we paid less than $5k for the house, excluding bedrooms, theatre and wet areas. good luck with your decision! Re: Tile, wood laminate or vinyl planks 12Nov 14, 2012 4:32 pm Good Luck with the vinyl plank colours, would be great to see the finished product. I have a rental which i lived in it for 7 years with Laminate flooring. Did me well, but I looked after it. I had a tenant absolutely wreck the entire home with using a wet mop when i even bought a sabco mop and no avail. Finally kicked her out and was put onto vinyl planks which are getting installed next week. Have heard rave reveiws and wish I had known about them years ago! you can use any mop on them, and like Rosewood stated to use a steam mop...... plus if you have kids, I also noticed with my mates who has just installed the vinyl planks, they are less noisy than laminate too Re: Tile, wood laminate or vinyl planks 13Nov 14, 2012 5:16 pm A member here sent me her photo of her viny planks she has installed. The same product as I am using only mine is a darker shade. After I posted the colour of my floor in a paint thread she sent a picture of her paint & floor. I am sure she would not object to me sharing it. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/21372568/vinyl%20planks.jpg Re: Tile, wood laminate or vinyl planks 14Nov 14, 2012 6:05 pm Rosewood that is actually the colour we are looking at! The more I see of them the more I am convinced they are the best option? I'd love to know which colour that is if they mentioned? Re: Tile, wood laminate or vinyl planks 15Nov 14, 2012 8:24 pm it was summer oak art select by Karndean, mine is autumn oak . By the way Karndean send you out the samples they are 1.2mts long. I selected 2 colours & from memory they arrived by courier in about a week after I ordered them. I don't recall seeing the summer oak but one of my samples was spring oak & I found that one too light. just order some from their web site. Re: Tile, wood laminate or vinyl planks 16Nov 14, 2012 8:43 pm That is the one I had seen and liked! I will have to order them, we have it down to three that are all similar. Classic, summer or Wellington oak.
