Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Apr 03, 2008 8:18 pm Hi Everyone!
Currently I have my building contract such that the builder will build my staircase to be ready for carpeting. The staircase will have timber flooring at both top and bottom landings when complete. The house is a split level and the staircase is the means to get from the lower level (garage/entry/study/theatre) to the main level (everything else). I'm wondering if carpet is the right option from a wearing point of view. I like carpet because it will be a bit quieter, but I also wonder if it will look out of place when the only other carpet is tucked away in bedrooms and in the theatre. any thoughts? Can post the floorplan if required. thanks, pasey Re: Carpet or Timber staircase 2Apr 03, 2008 8:45 pm I have lived in a house with both carpet and floorboards and personally I prefer floorboards and will be having these in my new home.
I find the carpets (note it could be because mine aren't high quality) look shabby around the edges and are more difficult to keep clean, I like the fact spills etc can be mopped up on timber floors. I also prefer the overall look of timber. Carpets are warmer and less noisy, they are also more forgiving with falls, but then again you can't have those fun sleeping bag races down the timber stairs if you have carpet! Re: Carpet or Timber staircase 4Apr 03, 2008 10:10 pm we have lived with both and I think carpet is a good way of separating space + they are quieter and nice to walk on.
we will have wooden floors in our new house + wooden stairs but I think in your application carpet would be fine. Re: Carpet or Timber staircase 5Apr 03, 2008 10:13 pm I prefer timber instead carpet. It is easier to do the cleaning.
Floorboard is good as during winter, you won't feel cool when you walk on the floorboard. Never as slippery as a hard surface! Which would you prefer to slip and fall onto?.... a carpeted staircase or timber? Ash. Re: Carpet or Timber staircase 10Apr 05, 2008 4:35 pm Hi Pasey,
I'm building with Franson Homes in Stage 12. Your floor plans are very similar to to ours.... Garage, entry and Study on the ground floor and the rest on level 1. We have selected Timber flooring (VIC ash) for entry, stairs, Dining and Family. I think it looks great (IMO). Are you also in Stage 12? Never as slippery as a hard surface! Which would you prefer to slip and fall onto?.... a carpeted staircase or timber? Ash. definitely prefer the carpet for the softness and the noise. concerned mostly about having to compromise on the other carpets to get something really heavy duty for the staircase. Plus the fact that this piece of carpet will be isolated so much from the rest of the carpet that it might look out of place. Ash, generally what makes the difference in heavy duty and extra heavy duty? Does extra heavy duty mean they can't be as nice in terms of look and texture as carpets not rated as highly? i.e. comparing commercial carpets with residential makes me think that the hardiest carpets look/feel poorer than the more delicate ones. Re: Carpet or Timber staircase 16Apr 05, 2008 5:30 pm Like the floor plan...looks like every room will be fully utilised..no wasted space. If I'm reading the plan right you can access the sub floor space?..it will just have post through it?..therefore ideal for storage..?
Oh and for the record...I like timber staircases..in the "new" place we have an open timber staircase and it's one of the many features we fell in love with. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Carpet or Timber staircase 17Apr 05, 2008 5:36 pm to_do_list Like the floor plan...looks like every room will be fully utilised..no wasted space. There are expansive views from the front of the first floor too that had to be incorporated in. yep, it wil have a heap of underfloor storage, and the ducted heating/cooling distribution will be there too Re: Carpet or Timber staircase 18Apr 05, 2008 5:44 pm I had another look at the plan....OK now I am insanely jealous....
About the expansive views...nah! About the storage...nah! About the dedicated home theatre...nah! . . . . . .
