The greatest carpet fibre in the world, Smartstrand by Mohawk, just got better with the arrival into Australia of the latest version of Smartstrand, Smartstrand Silk. Back in 2011, Tom Lape said this in an interview about the carpet fibre that is changing the world of flooring.....
MOHAWK UNLOCKS UNPRECEDENTED LEVEL OF SOFTNESS WITH SMARTSTRAND SILK CARPET
DALTON, Ga. Dec. 1, 2011—Mohawk is once again revolutionizing the carpet industry, this time engineering the most luxuriously soft carpet available today. Only SmartStrand® Silk™ provides more deluxe softness, more comfort and more home enjoyment, while still setting the industry’s standard for stain and soil protection and durability.
“The all-new SmartStrand Silk product platform places Mohawk years ahead of the competition,” said Tom Lape, president of residential and commercial at Mohawk. “Our SmartStrand collection has set records in stain and soil protection, durability, and softness. Now we’ve raised the bar even higher with SmartStrand Silk. With this innovation, we are offering consumers unprecedented softness and a thicker, plusher feel. This is by far the softest carpet available today.”
SmartStrand Silk is the only luxuriously soft carpet that has built-in lifetime stain and soil protection that never wears, washes off or diminishes over time. Even powerful stains like mustard, red Kool-Aid® (read Cordial) and red wine are no match for this revolutionary carpet, which is easily cleaned with just water and requires no topical chemicals.
In addition, SmartStrand Silk proves once and for all that exceptional softness and strength can go together. Durability is built into SmartStrand Silk’s unique triexta fiber. This superior fiber bends easily, rebounds quickly and resists the crushing and matting that can occur with other carpet types.
“The revolutionary stain and soil protection, the unmatched durability—that’s all very important—but comfort is the main reason consumers choose to install carpet in their home,” explained David Duncan, senior vice-president of marketing at Mohawk. “SmartStrand Silk unlocks a new level of comfort by offering the most softness available today. Consumers already love SmartStrand —just wait until they feel SmartStrand Silk.”
“SmartStrand has a firm position in the lowest claim category, making SmartStrand Silk the perfect combination of trusted reliability and total relaxation,” added Lape. “It offers the consumer maximum softness and minimum maintenance".
SmartStrand Silk with renewably sourced polymer makes being green an easy choice. The carpet exclusively offers fiber made with Bio-PDO™, the key ingredient, which is produced from corn sugar. Thanks to this central ingredient, 37 percent of the carpet is made from renewable resources instead of the more limited petroleum-based ingredients used in most other carpets.
As a result, production of seven square yards of 40-ounce SmartStrand Silk carpet saves enough energy and resources to equal one gallon of gasoline—up to 10 million gallons of gasoline each year. Production of SmartStrand Silk also emits 63 percent less greenhouse gas than production of nylon 6.
Smartstrand Silk - its just better !

The fibre is Mohawk's own Triexta. It's not nylon, not polyester, not wool, it's literally it's own class of fibre. It was developed by DuPont and Mohawk.
Rugs are not on the horizon, although many people have made rugs from the carpet. There are 4 ranges with 40 colours to choose from.

Just an update. In the short time it has been released in Australia, it has sold record numbers. Seriously, anyone buying carpet at least has to feel it before they buy anything else, just in case. It's so much better, you will be amazed.

Probably similar to any non wool carpet. They will all melt unless specifically treated with fire retardent, and this will wash out wherever and when ever you clean it.

Just wondering how this carpet copes with possible burns from wood fire. ie fire retardancy, 'melting', etc.
It meets with the United States standards.

Abit of an oversell HN! We don't have it at Carpet Court, so it can't possibly be the greatest carpet in the world!
I will admit its pretty good stuff & the samples felt great @ Surfaces.
I still think Smartstrand is similar to our Redbook Green & will admit in my humble opinion they are both really good carpets.
Having the Installation on Dunlop Springtred Ultimate or similar from Airstep & MJS would be the way to go.
An 11mm low density u'lay will not do any carpets any favours in the long term.
Dunlop's Ultimate is 120kg/m3 density, I would imagine C9 is no better than 95.
If you are only going 95 density, its better to go with the Dunlop Springtred Extra which is 9mm & 95kg/m3 density.
We should have 6 ranges in Redbook Green in the next few months & currently have 4 which look fantastic in my opinion.
From my investigation Triexta is similar to Polyester.
