And I'm seeing BLACK FLOORBOARDS!!!!! Yes I'm anti floorboards..... but I lover black floorboards, like you see in a lot of Englich homes, white walls... How are they achieved? Are they stained black or painted black? I'm just not sure.... is anyone having them? Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 3Oct 07, 2008 6:13 pm I've seen them painted black an issue of Trends Renovation magazine about 6 months ago and they looked great with fresh white walls. i've also seen a really dark brown stain - a wenge colour I think - but I'm not sure if you could get a black stain. Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 4Oct 07, 2008 6:49 pm I have seen cypress pine done like that using a product called 'Black Japan' which is manufactured by Feast Watson Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 5Oct 07, 2008 8:10 pm The colours that are popular at the moment are
Wenge - Dark chocolate / black brown. Black Japan - Very dark black. These are stains. Your flooring guy will need to stain the timber floor before sealing it and may even need to add some stain to the final top coat to get the depth of colour. Timbacare - Save Your Furniture! This has some dark stained floors.... http://www.myflooring.com.au/Gallery.htm Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 7Oct 07, 2008 9:35 pm I've just some research on black Japan... I don't think that's it. I mean true jet black. Lots of English row houses have jet black wooden floors.... I did some research tonight and in England they paint then with outdoor paint.
And with some stuff that gives a glass like finish. Does anyone do this in Australia? I don't want any grain coming through... just jet black. I'm thinking that they can just be repainted if they are painted rather than sanded and stained.... And scratches could be touched up with the paint... Maybe it's just not done here.... it's just something I'm throwing around.... Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 9Oct 08, 2008 12:32 am Black is really had to keep clean. My last 'place had jarrah floors that were almost black due to the age of them after i'd polyed them and it showed up the slightest bit of dirt and mud. Your a cleaning freak arent you
As for painting it to cover the scratches - it works - I've had lime washed boards - via a white lime wash stain that was then painted that was good. black glossy floors are a bit like black cars - white cars and mud- One shows it up - the other doesnt. Steve' ps - now that you're starting all over again. how about a bit more eco design this time Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 10Oct 08, 2008 8:03 am Yak_Chat ps - now that you're starting all over again. how about a bit more eco design this time The reality is... and everyone can argue as much as they like.... to get an eco design for our block is hopeless.... north facing living areas WILL NOT WORK as I will not be able to see the backyard from the front of the house. To get light in with all those high windows you've talked about previously... yep no worries ....... is the 16k we have lost by walking from our last builder going to pay for the architect??? There will only be four people in the house.... but being three different generations gives us different needs. We need space, that is the reality.... an eco design to face north will kill our budget and make the house have to come down considerably in size... which then becomes unworkable for us. I'm not building an eco house, with an eco design.... but I'm doing the best I can with the block I've got.... can that just be enough for once? I just don't need guilt and crap on top of everything else at the moment. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I'm thinking that they can just be repainted if they are painted rather than sanded and stained.... Why not do a black polished concrete? Or a tough black lino floor? if you don't want to see any grain. After 4 years - we're in! Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 12Oct 08, 2008 8:11 am Because it still looks like boards... you can still see that they are floorboards and they still feel like floorboards.... Terrence Malick Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 13Oct 08, 2008 8:34 am I think the black boards will look great with the design Joles. Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 14Oct 08, 2008 9:37 am Jo there was a an episode of Grand Designs this year (our season) where a couple had renovated an old English house in which they incorporated the old wallpaper, friezes etc in a modern styling. One of the characteristics of whatever English period was using painted black painted floorboards, if you can be bothered trawling through http://www.channel4.com/4homes/on-tv/grand-designs/ you might find it.
joles I'm not building an eco house, with an eco design.... Just build an eco-friendly cubby...our house it's absolute crap for solar gain...back faces south...but the cubby is fantastic.... Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 15Oct 08, 2008 12:02 pm hey joles found these pics on google images.

The theme was black white and green and a touch of hollywood glamour. They called them ebonized floors......The pics were from an eddition of Vogue in 2006......I hope this helps a lttle. Just by looking at these floors I think they will definately work......they look stunning. Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 18Oct 08, 2008 6:02 pm Gweluphome.... YES YES YES YES YES...... Thank you!
That's what I mean.... BLACK BLACK BLACK...... Of course my dogs are a little... ummm... bigger than that fluffball... Did it say anything about the floors in the article? I've been researching how they are finished and I can't get a definitive answer.... Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 19Oct 08, 2008 6:09 pm Jo, have you checked out Feast Watson's website ?They've been around for almost 100 years, providing floor stains for Australian consumers.
This link takes you to their instructions on treating flooring with black japan : http://www.feastwatson.com/pdfs/FeastWatson_Back_Japan_Floors.pdf Their website provides recommended Victorian flooring contractors. You should give them a call. Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 20Oct 08, 2008 6:14 pm Southies I don't think it's Black Japan. ... BJ seems to let the wood grain show through... the look I mean is dead black... as though it's been painted... I've looked and some sites say it's outdoor paving paint... some say it's epoxy... some say it's this glass finish stuff.
But they're all overseas sites so I don't know what we do...... I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself.
