Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Apr 17, 2012 10:38 am Hi there, I'm new to the forum and after researching, i wanted to get some experienced opinions on floorboards. We have just purchased our first home, which is a federation brick home in Sydney. We are yet to lift the carpet to see the state of the original floorboards, will do so this weekend. I have some questions about the restoration process: Does anyone have any experience with floor staining? I understand not all companies offer this as a service, however i would ideally like to have a darker oak color, rather than natural color of the wood. I have a friend living in the area, and am assuming the boards used in both houses (due to the age of the properties) to be of similar species. Their boards are varnished only and very light in color. What is the average cost per sq meter for cleaning, filling gaps, sanding, staining and varnishing, in Sydney? Thanks in advance, Jen Re: Any advice on sanding and staining old floorboards 2Apr 17, 2012 7:31 pm Post some pics and we can give you a better idea Any advice on sanding and staining old floorboards 3Apr 17, 2012 10:14 pm We had our floors done a few years ago with just a clear varnish as they were jarrah floorboards and even though they were in a bad state to start with, they looked amazing when finished. We paid $400 a room I think. As namtrak above says although the timber could also be one of the lighter coloured hardwoods. A few other stains in there too possibly from a leaking fridge etc. You might be disappointed also that some of that stain probably goes into the timber quite deep meaning no matter how much you sand it that dark colouring may remain. We've removed and replaced some floors in the past because of this. Stewie Hi, I have an area of zincalume cladding encasing a number of external downpipes.
