Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Mar 28, 2012 12:45 pm Hi all We are laying laminate wood look flooring in our new house. The builder has tacked on the skirting boards downstairs so they can be easily removed to lay the laminate boards and then put back on afterwards (thus no need for the wood look 'beading' around the edges where the boards meet the wall. Can anyone tell me what happens where there is no skirting boards, ie where the floor joins the stairs, where the architraves around the doors meet the floors, where the floor meets a sliding door to the alfresco, where the floor joins the the tiles at our entry door etc? Thanks Re: Laying laminate flooring 2Mar 28, 2012 2:24 pm Cut out the bottom of door jams with a saw, to the thickness of the laminate and underlay. The laminate is cut so it can slide it under the jam for a good finish. Make sure you cut enough out so that you still have the expansion gap under the jam. There are various end, and cover trims that are available from the retailer, to finish to your doorways and sliding doors. Re: Laying laminate flooring 3Mar 28, 2012 5:20 pm A small angle grinder with a tile cutting blade will cut through your jambs and arcs, the trick is do a bit at a time on each one so you dont burn it instead of cutting it. If you haven't started, take a bit of time to set out so you avoid thin cuts along long walls, any walls for that matter. Taking 30mm of the boards on one side of the room may mean the difference between a 40mm or 10mm strip on the other side. Oh and learn some new swear words, cause you will use up all the ones you know trying to get that last *^&#ing +#$% *^$%e of a peice under the jamb of that *&^$%g door way. Re: Laying laminate flooring 4Mar 29, 2012 6:31 pm Ah! the last row under door jambs, as in a hallway etc.. Un-click the last full row, slide last row under jamb, replace last full row and hammer both rows together. Only works for a click system that is flexible ie. the std. type thinner laminate. Not thicker floating floors like bamboo etc. Safer to use a high-frequency multi-tool for undercutting. Gets into those difficult multi-corner jambs and the jamb at sliding doors like the OP has. Handsaw for open jambs. I will do myself out of a job if I give too much information.
