Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Mar 11, 2012 4:24 pm Hi all Currently in the process of building our latest home. We are considering installing strand woven, uniclick bamboo flooring, throughout the kitchen, dining and hallways. We do however, have 2 Staffies that spend alot of time inside, generally laying around snoozing, (like most Staffies) but do like to have the odd play session running around the house. Our concern is how easily will the bamboo scratch over time with their claws. The previous house we built and recently sold, had tiles in these ares and so didn't pose a problem. We really love the look of the bamboo, but are unsure how it will withstand dog claws and therefore whether we should go bamboo or tiles. Any feedback here would be really appreciated. But the best thing about them is they can be sanded back many times. Bamboo has up to 6 layers of polyurethane on them and is very hard wearing.....it may take a bit to scratch them but it can happen. Thanks Cheryl Hi Cheryl, Dogs WILL scratch the floor guaranteed. If the dogs are inside a fair bit and you think any scratches will drive you mad, then stay away from a floor with a coating. The new AO coatings are very good, but can still scratch. As Michelle said, it can be sanded back, however most people don't want to move all their furniture out and stay in a hotel while that's happening, so the tend to not do it. Rather, it's more common place when people buy a home and they do that prior to moving in. We'd suggest a PVC floor as you could then apply an aftermarket coating yourself with a mop and the dogs will scratch that, not the floor. Then when you need to, you can strip the coating off and put a new one on to rejuvenate the floor. The added benefit is it is not effected by water, so If your dogs knock over their water bowl or have an accident, then you wont have to ring your insurance company ! You can get several options, ranging from traditional stick down versions like that from Amtico, or the floating kind like Allure (there are other stick down and floating brands, but we do not sell them so cannot recommend them for good or bad). Perhaps Michelle or Gizmoe can recommend the other brands. Your only other option if you have to go with a wood floor (even though bamboo is a grass, but for this reply, let's class it as a wood), would be an oiled floor. Popular in the States and Europe, oiled oak floors have a timeless quality and have zero gloss. The great thing about them is that you can simply rub oil onto the scratch and make it go away - kind of like an old cricket bat! You wouldn't solve the potential water damage problem with them though. We just installed bamboo (ArrowSun strandwoven) - we figured that the coating is going to get scuffed up by the pooch but the bamboo should be pretty resilient (although, quite frankly, a couple of days in a nice hotel with room service, whilst the floors get refinished sounds ok to me). So far so good with the floor. I think because the bamboo is so hard, the dog's dull claws can't make a purchase on it for it to be scratched - but I'll let you know how we go. We were all set to get the Inovar floating laminate floor, because of it's toughness and durability, but at the end of the day the beauty of the bamboo won us over. Fortunately I quite like the look of rustic, worn timber floors (and we chose a fairly distressed, mixed up looking bamboo) so I think we'll be alright. Or else there will be a happy pooch with two very sad fathers and a crappy, scratched up floor It's only money. Re: Bamboo Flooring - with inside dogs? 5Mar 12, 2012 3:58 pm Thanks for the info, will definitely have to have a big re think and weigh up all our options before we make a final decision on the flooring. Purchase 1 pack of bamboo and temporarily lay it out on top of the rental floorboards we are currently residing, subject it to plenty of daily wear and tear....dog claws especially Then hopefully we can make the decision on the final purchase....bamboo or tiles...over the next few weeks. A big decision as the final new build job will be about 110m2. We have strandwoven bamboo (about 100sqm) with a border collie and a cross kelpie/cattledog. We've had the floor down 2 years and haven't noticed any major scratching. . . Phil had polyurethane coated pine in his previous house. . . Used to throw the tennis ball for the border collie to chase, and the floor was totally scratched to bits. . . He doesn't do that any more One thing I would say though, we haven't really had any major spillages, but I did pick up a wet teatowel from the floor once, which looked like it had been there a while. . . It had discoloured the bamboo around this area, especially going down between the two pieces. Beware of fluids! Re: Bamboo Flooring - with inside dogs? 8Mar 16, 2012 11:22 am we,ve had our coffee colored bamboo floors in for a few months now, and we have a staffy @ 7 yrs old, who also has her little playful spurts, but we dont let the kids stir her up inside now, and she hasnt scratched the floors.[that we can see anyway].the most damage done to our floors was the installer who had his stands and toolboxes on the floor and left scratches.we wear shoes inside, have 3 sons, a dog whos inside a lot, and havent damaged our floors too much, a couple of tiny surface scrtatches with my vacuum cleaner. And they are not as precious with water as laminates also. The worst part about my bamboo floors is you can mop them and within half hour of ppl walking on them you can see the smudgey footprints.Ive heard of others also saying the same about theirs. Re: Bamboo Flooring - with inside dogs? 9Mar 16, 2012 9:09 pm Thanks again, for all the useful feedback. Looking forward to trial testing the bamboo with a sample area in the rental to see how it stands up to normal traffic with us 4 (mum, dad, 2 teenagers) and our 2 Staffies. Not worried about the water side of things so much, as over the years we've rarely spilt anything inside where we plan to lay the bamboo. Don't normally leave water bowls for the dogs inside, the dogs know they have to go outside for drinks. Our bathrooms and laundry -the main 'wet areas' will be tiled, it's only the kitchen area that has the potential for water. We have it laid out temporarily over the rental floor to see how it goes for a few weeks, with our normal household traffic of teenagers and dogs. We obtained 2 colours Coffee and Natural, both in a satin finish. Really loving the look of it and are already impressed with its resilience, compared to the much softer baltic pine gloss floors in the rental. It's considered one of the hardest wearing and scratch proof types of flooring because the bamboo is actually shredded then compact together in a huge 2000 tonne press. This makes it extremely dense and therefore much harder and less prone to scratching and denting. That's not to say that is 100% proof, but compared to many other products it should wear against your two staffies quite well. Hope all goes well for your test run, and please feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. Re: Bamboo Flooring - with inside dogs? 13Apr 01, 2012 8:43 pm So far so good. Really impressed with the bamboo test area. Hasn't got a single mark on it as yet from what we can see and the dogs have been running over it all week and we have been walking over it too with shoes. Still looking fantastic. You might want to splash a bit of water on the join of two boards, and/or leave a damp cloth on it overnight and see what happens before you put it in the kitchen Re: Bamboo Flooring - with inside dogs? 15Apr 03, 2012 1:24 pm Hi All I am also weighing up whether to to get Bamboo Flooring. I was a at a carpet retailer and they showed me the Earth Bamboo brand. They look really nice and with a great shine to them. I decided to come on to the forum as I always do when deciding on something to get agnostic advice on what is the best solution. We were quote around $145per sq mtr installed (62sqm) with underlay for the Strand Woven option, is this a fair price from anyones experience. I did notice on another thread someone mentioned $65 which seems to good to be true. Also we would be laying over the existing chipboard, can any see an issue with this? One last one, this will be laid on the second level (really first level but a split house) has anyone had an issue with acquostics in regard to noise as the kids run a lot even though they have been told and I heard they have an issue in Qld due to moisture and the climate and may warp in a couple of years. Sorry that was not one last one but two last ones.. Just want to make the right decision so any assistance would be great. Cheers Hi kaindec, $145 m2 is on the higher side of where you would want to be. The installers do charge a bit more in QLD though, however we would suggest you could be looking closer to the $100 - $110m2 fully installed mark for a top quality strand woven product such as the Naturally Bamboo range sold by our Franchisees in Queensland. It comes in a wide range of colours, literally from white through to black ! With a lifetime warranty on the structural integrity and a 25 year surface wear warranty, you won't find a more supported strand woven bamboo product in the country. It would be installed over our Silent Shield underlay which provides a superior acoustic solution and meets (actually it exceeds) the BCA2007 requirements for sound reduction on multi level installations. A brochure on the products is viewable here on the Homeone site in the Harvey Norman page. Are you in Brisbane or Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast or ? We can suggest a store and a contact person if it is of some help. Best wishes. I appeciate the offer and reply but I think I will go with a business whose core competency is flooring. Cheers Sure. We respect your opinion, but must disgaree with the assumptions it draws. In terms of quality of the product, perhaps a non-flooring person should compare the warranties and the nature of what is covered. This represents the belief and the confidence that the product is held in by the manufacturer and the retailer. Does it come with a lifetime warranty ? Does it even have a wear warranty....probably not. It should be noted that Harvey Norman consists of hundreds and hundreds of individual franchises. Franchisees are selected for their knowledge and business skills within their respective fields. Flooring franchisees have nothing do with, or any knowledge of electrical, computers, bedding or furniture in terms of running those franchises. In a building that you would see as your local Harvey Norman store, there will be from 2 up to 6 individual franchised operations running the collective store. No different than tenants in a shopping complex. They and their teams, and indeed their installation teams, are flooring professionals, pure and simple. It's the same as dealing with any flooring retailer, except you have the added support of a robust franchisor business that turns over around $6billion a year and the respective backup in terms of customer service values, adherence to relative Australian Standards in terms of important issues like privacy, chain of custody on information, warranties on products, Australian Consumer Law, including the recent updates which occurred 01/01/2012 aimed at protecting your interests as a valued customer, all the way to the chemical content of the products we sell, the place of origin of the product (ie FSC certification). Larger "branded" retailers are held to account at a much higher level, both by consumers and by government agencies and so generally you should receive a superior outcome because of this. In terms of product knowledge and industry experience, many franchisees have been in the industry for their entire careers, involved with manufacturing in carpet, vinyl and laminates etc. Coupled with vast experience in retailing and installations with several companies, prior to the opportunity to join the Harvey Norman franchised operations, we don't think you can look at any "group" in the country and find a more committed and knowledgable group of flooring professionals. Indeed that is the opinion of many of our suppliers. Our operations extend to dealing direct with global manufacturers in South America, Egypt, Belgium, Turkey, China, Malayasia, North America and India. It could be argued that the product knowledge, depth of products on offer and the entire package available from a Harvey Norman franchisee is by far a superior offer than the average "mum & dad" franchised carpet store that is not financially linked or supported with strict administration mechanisms and procedures from above. Last but not least, in difficult economic times, the uncertainty that surrounds the security of your deposit, the value of a warranty from a small family business that may or may not still be there next week, next year or next decade.....are issues that have to be questioned. A week does not go by, in each state of this country that we deal in, that we don't have a distraught customer come through our doors who purchased a floor from a "flooring specialist" who has since gone bankrupt, closed down etc and they readily lose their money, lose their warranty, or simply can't buy more of the same product to do the rest of their home.... We hope you may reconsider the merits of "giving us a go" and you just may be pleasantly surprised Either way, thanks for your honesty and best wishes for your flooring project.
